The Different Types of TV Antennae

For families who aren’t interested in getting every channel under the sun through satellite or cable networks and paying a monthly fee that can get expensive, using tv antennae is a great way to still get the basics from your local broadcasting like the news and weather to stay involved, without having to pay too much. Many families have made this decision, but it’s best to know about the different kinds of antennas out there before making the purchase. Make sure you know where your local broadcasting station is located before starting the process of buying an antenna to ensure you get the right one, and talking to an expert can help if you’re really unsure or struggling between the options.

HD TV Antennae

Getting an HD digital antenna is a great choice if picture and image quality is important to you. Since high-definition TVs are common in even homes without much technology, getting this kind of antenna would probably work for your set-up with any additional devices or purchases needed. Make sure you check your TV first to make sure it is HD as well, and keep in mind that most HD TV sets will require this kind of an antenna. People like getting these for the image quality, and they’re often very easy to set up just like indoor antennas.

Indoor Antennas

This is the most common kind of antenna that can be found in homes without HD TV sets. They have the easiest setup, just plug in and start! Because of the simplicity of these antenna’s and their low-maintenance design, families have been drawn to them. If you live near your local broadcasting station, this may be the best option for you.

Outdoor Antennas

For homes that live further from their local broadcasting station or are surrounded by trees that block reception, outdoor antennas could be a better fit for your family. They’re bigger and have a fairly complicated setup process including some mounting hardware, and possibly a ladder since they do best placed high up.

Directional Antennas

Rural areas are the targeted place for directional antennas. They’re the opposite of multi-directional antennas, which we didn’t address, but are designed for heavily populated areas such as cities. Antennas with a single direction help families find reception from the nearest broadcasting tower by focusing all of the power in that direction exactly. These antennas have the longest range and are great for country families.

Amplified Antennas

One of the biggest issues that people find with TV antennae is weak signals, and if you’re one of the families that suffer from that problem, look into an amplified antenna to fix it. As the name suggests, these antennas are designed to be the most powerful and pick up weak signals easier for a better picture and more stable reception. You can find amplified versions of most antennas, including the ones previously listed.
