The world is changing, and somehow our phones are more important for tweeting, sending emails, and Instagramming than making calls and sending texts. We are also carrying tablets and laptops everywhere with us, who, quite frankly, would also love to get a bit of this internet experience too.
The mobile carriers are obviously no strangers to this, and while texts are mostly given away as unlimited in contracts, and minutes have never been cheapers, data is where the cost lies. You have to pay a premium for those little 1s and 0s, and it is not pleasant.
Enter MobiData. They have created the perfect plan for people who want to use just data, and are happy to pop in a SIM into their tablet, or mobile Wifi device. It gives you 3G+ coverage, and does so at a very low cost.
Before we go any further, just to give you a taster of what you can expect in terms of speeds. Taken this morning, at half 7, in Oxford.
About 6Mbps download, and a quarter of a mb to upload. Obviously, I have been doing this quite a lot, and generally you’ll find that uploading is north of 1mbps, and the download rate is fairly consistent too. They do tend to vary location to location, and time to time, based on how much of it is being used in the world. The network operates on THREE, so basically your coverage is whatever THREE delivers.
So, first of all, the biggest question. Can you make calls and send texts? No!
This means that this has been totally focused on the data market, and probably better off in tablets or Wifi devices, but I have actually been using it in one of my spare phones, and it is actually brilliant, as you can set up phones as portable hotspots. You will still need a different SIM for making calls and texts though.
So, what makes this so special then? The price! You can get up to 20GB for just £20, making this the cheapest contract on the market.
You also get no long term contracts, and everything is a monthly rolling contract.
It comes in 1GB, 5GB and 10GB packages, and the rolling contracts can be cancelled at any time.
But what really makes this better than any other service (presently) is that you can take this to 39 countries outside the UK, keep your data on, and not worry about roaming charges.
As far as their specs go, they are rated up to 21mbps, at a fairly low cost.
