Whether it is the e-commerce website you are choosing to build or the online store you are looking to establish this season, building a website isn’t a hard deal anymore. Web hosting environment for the businesses these days have more dynamic perception than it was before.

Operating System (OS) also has its fair share of role in fitting best in this perception of dynamism. It requires your attention and awareness both when it comes to choosing a right OS for your VPS server. Needless to say, both VPS and operating system decide the fate of your business.

Every so often, website owners do not have the idea which OS to choose. No wonder, OS plays an important role in the smooth performance of your website. Also, configuring the VPS server for a tweaked performance comes as an integral part of any OS.

SIGNIFICANCE OF CHOOSING AN OS

Now that you have decided already to choose VPS for a hosting alternative, finding the right operating system is the next essential task. An operating system is a core essence of any hosting server that involves both configuring the server settings and the site performance.

When it comes to picking the best OS for a website, even the big tech-savvy and successful business operators get confused. Sometimes, plenty of online businesses do not know which OS to choose from. Speaking of which, it results in poor performance of their website.

Basically, there are two types of Operating Systems that are high in demand as a server base these days – Windows and Linux. There are several hosting providers out there offering a wide array of hosting solutions to their end users.

A few hosting companies like Hostinger, GoDaddy or Bluehost promote Linux based VPS hosting for better performance and feature enriched experience. Hosting solutions that entail Linux as a base OS can result into huge cost reduction as it is a license-free open-source operating system.

OPERATING SYSTEM – LINUX

Since it is an open-source platform, Linux is considered as the best operating system when it comes to a virtual private server. Out of the various distributions that Linux has to offer, five of them are leading the hosting industry.

CentOS – If it is only one website that you are dealing with, CentOS distribution can be your best choice. It syncs perfectly well with a shared hosting environment that doesn’t cost you much unlike its VPS hosting counterpart.

It is one of the most trusted Linux lines of distribution when it comes to reliability and to manage overselling. One of the most noteworthy facts about CentOS is its availability. This line of distribution has suffered a few bugs and technical inconsistencies before, but it’s now sorted out.

Apart from that, it utilizes rpm as a packet manager. Since it is built on the RHEL base, it fits well with the industrial benchmark. Therefore, this allows CentOS to support enterprise software, just in case your service provider does not support them.

Debian – One of the good characteristics of Debian is that, it allows the developers to create essential packages that are stacked into proportionate packets for the end-users to install. The drivers for this Linux line of distribution are developed by the users of GNU/kFreeBSD GNU/Linux.

With that being said, it comes as a huge support in the long term to support your hardware. It even functions smoothly when a new line of hardware production comes to halt. In addition, Debian community is extremely responsive in rectifying the errors in the system.

Ubuntu –  It is known as one of the most identifiable lines of Linux distribution when it comes to hosting solutions. Since Ubuntu is easy to use and learn, it goes both ways for a desktop OS and a server OS. Certain updates that support both Windows and Mac, make it widely popular.

However, a frequent update sometimes brings out bugs in the system, but they are rectifiable. The LTS distribution for that matter is extremely reliable and you can start with it being a new Linux user. Online communities are always there to troubleshoot your queries.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) – However, it comes as a paid OS line of distribution, it is known to be the benchmark for Linux servers being an enterprise-grade. RHEL can handle heavy loads and offers a boosted performance.

Since it is a paid OS and many website owners rely on this to handle the heavy traffic and resource consumption, it becomes popular in the enterprise software industry. Consequently, a few enterprise software service providers support only the RHEL.

Fedora – Fedora is yet another Linux-based operating system that is extremely flexible in nature. Security is the biggest aspect when it comes to any online endeavor. Speaking of which, Fedora is extremely reliable from a security point of view.

It is integrated with a firewall setting right in the beginning which can be configured with the help of a graphical interface or a terminal. Also, due to the customizable security enhancements that are derived from RHEL, it has now become a market leader in the digital world.

OPERATING SYSTEM – WINDOWS

There’s no question about it that Windows is a product from Microsoft and the company has spilled billions of dollars to make it a successful OS to facilitate hosting solutions. However, there are only a few who use this Operating System to fulfill their hosting requirements.

A user requires to pay for the license in order to use it. Nevertheless, due to its compatibility with the .NET and the applications based on the same, it still holds some popularity. Also, it all depends upon the requirement of a developer whether to choose Windows or not.

The interface is extremely simple and is easy to use. Speaking of simplicity, it gives you more control over the server with the help of the option known as Remote Desktop Access. It allows you to configure your server at any place at any time.

Final Verdict

Both the Windows and Linux are perfect for the hosting preferences. However, it depends upon the severity of the requirement of your website, whether to choose Linux or Windows Operating System. It is noteworthy that, both offer the best of their ability to satisfy their users.
