There is a reason why electric shavers haven’t quite replaced your average razor. That reason is the fact that electric shavers just don’t work very well when it comes to giving a wet shave, and often leave your skin patchy with hair. Enter Braun’s attempt at making that a matter of the past, the WaterFlex.
The idea is that unlike usual electric shavers, this one is specifically designed to work with shaving gel/foam, and even under a shower. In fact, as most men know, the best shaves happen right after, or during a shower, as the warm water softens your skin. The WaterFlex plans to make the most of that advantage.
To me, that presented two challenges. How easy is it to clean, and how good is the grip. Oh yeah, you may wonder about how ‘waterproof’ it is as well, but with an IPX7 rating (submerge it under 5 meters of water, people!!) you have nothing to worry about.
As far as grip goes, the overall design features the usual Braun ergonomic feel which fits well in your hand. The texture gives you a non-slip grip, which means you are able to hold it properly. A 33 degree swivel head also means that it can follow the contours of your face perfectly.
The next phase is to test how easy it is to clean. During a shave, the biggest problem I find is cleaning the razor under running water, to clean off the bristly hair, as well as the residue of shaving foam/gel. Electric razors often lack the same ease, but this one seems to be an exception. The foil is easy to clean, and running water or your shower will do the job.
It features a three blade cutting system, which is pretty standard among foil shavers.
So, after all this, what was the experience like?
A pleasant surprise for me. Mainly because of my past experience with using shavers in the wet. The swivel head is good, the anti-slip grip is definitely needed, and the feel on the skin is just what you want. Oh, and you also have a long hair trimmer to straighten your side burns or just ‘trim’ any long hair. The Optiblades are designed to give you a combination of closeness and gentleness, and they definitely do not disappoint.
A couple of LEDs let you know the battery status, while a ‘no-memory’ battery (Li-Ion) means you can be rest assured that the battery won’t deteriorate like the one on your phone or laptop.
It comes in four colours, black, white, blue and red, so you can take your pick!
Available now, it retails for £159.99 officially, but I have found better deals online.
