Given the popularity of laptops, notebooks and tablets, you may be forgiven for thinking that monitors have gone out of fashion, as I did. However, they are still in high demand amongst discerning consumers who love a larger, high-quality image, particularly gamers and those who want a bigger screen for movies and TV shows. This is why monitors have become so sophisticated now, as I learned when I was given the chance to review the Dell 24 S2418H.
When I think of monitors, I think of the bulky, very square, lumpy devices from the last century. I think of the ones that had no use away from the hard drive they were partnered with and the grainy images they delivered. Of course, I’ve experienced more modern monitors but I wasn’t prepared for seeing something that looked a lot like a television when I boxed the Dell 24 S2418H. It was simply beautiful and after my first impression, I was excited to see what it could do.
What struck me about this monitor is that it is so stylish and elegant. It’s 23.8” wide and has sleek edges giving an image with no borders and edge-to-edge viewing. The back of the monitor is black and smooth with the Dell logo and it sits on a chrome stand that honestly doesn’t look sturdy enough to hold such a heavy screen, and it was pretty heavy! However, it’s stronger than it looks. Once attached to the stand, it can tilt forwards or backwards to suit you. It’s only when you try to release the monitor from the stand that you encounter a problem. It looks together so securely that it’s quite difficult to separate them and a screwdriver is needed.
Dell have promised that the High Dynamic Range will deliver exceptional images, deep colours and a high contrast range of shades that will make the picture you view as authentic as possible. With claims like that being made, it has a lot to live up to and it does. It was easy to pair with the computer I was using, which was the Dell Latitude 5289, using the cables provided with the monitor. The images transmitted were even sharper than those on the laptop. The colours were vivid and authentic and the most important thing for me was, it was no trouble at all to connect the two devices, and then disconnect.
I spent a while watching some music videos to get a feel for the audio and visual experience together. It has dual front-firing 6W speakers which deliver exceptional sound quality, as clear as I would have expected and as authentic as I think is possible.
Overall, I think this monitor would be an excellent investment, especially for those who like to watch movies or TV shows online, or gamers. I would even go so far as to say that the sound and image quality is better than my television, which is a few years old now. The only downside was the difficulty in removing the stand, but I suspect that once you’ve got it set up, you won’t need to remove it too often and if you do, it’s something you could easily get the hang of. I would definitely recommend this monitor!
