It is no secret that Honor is a subsidy of Huawei, taking the good work done by Huawei and selling it at great prices under their badge. We have already loved the other Honor phones, such as the Honor 7, giving you great specs at a great price. Now Honor is stepping up a notch with the 5X, bringing you once again a great phone, at an ever better price.
The name does cause a bit of confusion though, as a (Nexus) phone with the same name was announced by Google this year, made by LG. Interestingly, the other Nexus, the 6P, is actually made by Huawei, Honor’s parent company.

We start off with the design. The phone features the same design values as the Honor 7, bringing to the masses an all metal body. The casing is made of diamond polished aluminium alloy, which features a unique ceramic coating. The logo itself is laser etched, to give a premium feel to the device. The whole design itself is inspired by the Guggenheim Museum in Spain, and the three colours it comes in represent the three times of the day that can be seen at the museum, as in dawn (silver), day (gold) and gray (night fall).
The Honor 5X also brings the Smart Fingerprint technology that has already featured in the likes of Honor 7 and the Huawei phones. Not only does it offer only 0.5seconds of unlocking time and 360 degree recognition, it also allows registering in only 6 taps. On par, most competitions take more than 10 taps, and a simple test on a nearby iPhone just showed that it took a staggering 13 taps to register your finger print.
What’s more, not only can you still use the fingerprint sensor to slide down your notifications, answer calls, but now you can even configure certain fingers to directly launch an app straight from sleep. Of course, for the likes of me this means Twitter (pinky) and Instagram (index) are just a finger tap away. You can, of course, if you wish, set it to launch emails or camera.
Privacy may be a concern with fingerprints and it is protected under three layers of protection. This includes a double encryption, and the ability to store it in Arm’s special Trust Zone. This means that it is stored directly in the chipset of the microcontroller running your phone, and is not accessible by regular hardware and software means.
The Honor 5X comes with a 5.5 inch screen, offering 1080p, giving 403ppi. The screen has been configured to offer extra clarity in bright sunlight, making this phone ideal in outdoor conditions.
The camera on the Honor 5X offers the following features:
- 13MP Rear Camera sensor
- Stacked Camera
- Blue Glass InfraRed Filter
- Five elements
- F2.0 aperture
- Anti-reflective Coating
And not unlike the Honor and Huawei phones already out there, it offers Perfect Selfie (giving you a Beauty Mode, with adjustable settings), Ultra Snapshot (double click volume down button to take a photo), Panaromic Selfie.
It also features Slow-Mo (120fps at 720p) and Time Lapse videos.
Of course, it offers many other features such as object tracking, good food mode, watermark, audio-notes, all focus, burst shot mode, etc.
It features a single box speaker chamber, making it louder and clearer for all your loud speaker and music needs.
The standard ear piece has also had some love, as it offers 150% louder sound than the average. This means phone calls should be louder and clearer, even in a noisy environment.
The phone features the following specs:
- Snapdragon 615 Octa Core
- 2 GB RAM
- Adreno 405 GPU
This should allow this phone to give you snappy performance, and even play those heavy duty 3D games available on the Play Store.
This phone packs 3000mAh of battery life, which is rated for 1.5 days for the average user and 1.06 days for a heavy user.
The phone offers 4G LTE which offers up to 150Mbps.
It not only offers Dual SIM slot, but it is also the first phone we have seen which not only offers two SIM slots, but also a micro SD card slot that you don’t need to share with your SIM slot. There are actually 3 slots for you to play with. It also gives you the offer of using a Nano SIM or a Micro SIM.
Other than that, there is the usual offerings of Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 2.0.
This phone runs on EMUI 3.1, which has Android 5.1 running underneath.
