Grado Labs, the maestros of handcrafted headphones, have unveiled their latest masterpiece: the Signature S950. Joining the esteemed Signature line, following the HP100 SE, the S950 brings a unique sonic character wrapped in the warmth of Brazilian Walnut.
Wood Meets Sound: A Signature Approach
Grado’s longstanding tradition of using wood in their headphone housings continues with the S950. This time, they’ve chosen Brazilian Walnut, a first for the brand, for its distinct sonic properties. While the HP100 SE boasts a more analytical, machined aluminium build, the S950 offers a relaxed and musical presentation, thanks to its carefully selected wooden construction.
Crafted for Comfort and Durability:
Lightweight at just 395 grams, the S950 is designed for extended listening sessions. Each handcrafted Brazilian Walnut housing is unique, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood grain. Known for its density and resistance to decay, Walnut provides stability and maintains consistent acoustic characteristics, regardless of temperature or humidity. And with sustainable sourcing practices in the Amazon rainforest, Grado ensures the protection of these vital ecosystems.
The Heart of the Sound: Grado’s 52mm S Driver:
At the core of the S950 lies a refined version of Grado’s new 52mm S driver, originally developed for the acclaimed HP100 SE. This driver, featuring a paper composite cone, a high-flux magnetic circuit made from rare earth alloys, and a lightweight copper-plated aluminium voice coil, delivers exceptional high-frequency detail, a smooth midrange, and powerful bass with minimal distortion.
While the HP100 SE is lauded for its detail and accuracy, the S950 offers a more neutral and balanced sound, providing a broader, more relaxed listening experience. It’s a headphone designed to let you connect with the emotional core of the music.
Detachable Cables: Customisation at Your Fingertips:
The Signature S950 features detachable cables, a welcome addition to Grado’s lineup. The included Signature Gold cable, with its softer, more durable braided finish and improved insulation, connects via a 4-pin balanced mini XLR plug. Future cable options will include 4-pin balanced XLR and 4.4mm balanced terminations, as well as variable cable lengths, allowing for complete customisation.
Enhanced Comfort and Stability:
The S950 utilises the updated headband assembly introduced with the HP100 SE. With 50% more padding and a stainless-steel band, it’s designed for maximum comfort during long listening sessions. The engraved aluminium alloy gimbals and stainless-steel height rods provide stability and durability.
