IFA 2017: What to expect from all the big brands

IFA, Internationale Funkausstellung, is here again. It is taking place in Berlin, Germany from September 1-6 this year. It is after all the biggest tech show in the world, hosted in Europe, and is open to the public. We can expect a lot more information starting August 28, when the press conferences start.

What are we expecting this year? That is the key question right now. Press releases confirm that final products are being given more space this year while components, as well as sourcing, are being moved to IFA Global Markets. This means we have a lot more to look forward to this year. Let’s see some of the things we can expect at IFA 2017

What is LG going to show?

Two new smartphones, LG V30 and V30+ are on the agenda for IFA this year. LG is using IFA for the first time as a launching pad. We are excited to see how LG’s new smartphones will fare this year. LG is set to take its V series mainstream and looks like the phones will be available in the European market.

Why is this exciting? LG V30 is set to be one of the best smartphones out there, with the power combined of previous year’s V20 and this year’s G6. Tech enthusiasts around the globe are already getting goose bumps, with the features that V30 and V30+ promise. The flagship smartphone comes Daydream (Google’s VR Platform) ready, is expected to run on Android Oreo and is powered by the latest processor by Qualcomm, Snapdragon 835. This processor will help run Daydream more efficiently as Snapdragon is 27% faster than its predecessor, and consumes 40% less power.

Samsung Gear

Samsung is all set to reveal its Gear Fit 2 Pro, the successor of the previous year’s Gear Fit 2 smartwatch. It looks like it has received a superb upgrade from the previous year’s version, and is rumoured to be waterproof and is being coupled with a GPS Radio and offline playback for Spotify. Its main highlight, however, is that it comes with swimming mode- no need to worry about logging minutes or laps later on.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro

A press conference on August 30, by Samsung, can reveal more information on what all they have planned for this year, but their emphasis seems to be on fitness gear wrist wearables coupled with perhaps some VR applications for Gear VR. Bixby may be on the agenda as well for this year. This AI Assistant rivals Amazon (Alexa), iOS (Siri) and Google (Home) and we are hoping that it makes its debut in IFA 2017 with language support for a wider range of countries, other than South Korea.

Sony and IFA 2017

Sony has always brought larger than life updates in IFA, as we saw in 2016. IFA could be a great platform to launch their Xperia XZ1, X1, and XZ1 Compact. Last year, Sony revealed Xperia X Compact and XZ. It also revealed Xperia XZs and XZ Premium in MWC 2017. We are looking forward to seeing an expansion of the X and XZ series in IFA 2017.

Some offhand rumours also indicate a successor to the previous year’s ZD9 TV. Let’s see if we are going to see a new LED TV this year from Sony.

Lenovo and MotoX

Lenovo won’t be left behind either. They have scheduled their press conference for the 31st of this month. So far, updates indicate that they may be unveiling their new smartphone, MotoX, being termed as Moto X4. It is quite possible that the laptops line, Yoga, may see an update as well.

What more can you expect

Rumors are ripe from various tech brand fronts, including Huawei, Fitbit, Asus, Toshiba, Philips, Acer, Alienware/Dell, Panasonic, and TomTom.

Huawei: Huawei has already launched P10 and P10 Plus earlier this year. We can perhaps expect Nova 2 series to be launched for the North American and European market.

Fitbit: Rumours suggest that Fitbit might be launching its new GPS enabled smartwatch this year in IFA. This could be a big deal as Fitbit recently bought Pebble.

Asus: We saw Zenfone 3 series last year in IFA. This year we can expect their smartwatch, Asus ZenWatch 4.

Philips: Philips has already confirmed that they would be showcasing their connected toothbrush. Rumours suggest a few more reveals including updates on their TV from TP Vision.

Alienware/Dell: 4k screens seem to be on the top agenda for IFA 2017 but more has yet to be seen.

What we look forward to, however, is all the press announcements that these brands will make, preceding the beginning of IFA from September 1, 2017. Sign up for updates as we continue to bring more on IFA 2017 right here on oxgadgets.com!
