Here’s How You Can Make More Time for Reading

If it were up to me, I would quit my job and read all day but sigh, this lifestyle needs to be funded. I do get questions on how I make time to read so I will share three tips that have worked for me. I will add though these have worked amazingly well for me and I hope they do, for you too.

  1. Turn waiting time into reading time

This one is sage advice from my father.  He says that whenever you find that you waiting at the doctor’s, or if you live in Karachi, sitting in traffic for hours, pull out a book. If words floating in front of your eyes are not your thing, listen to audio books. There are also amazing fiction podcasts like New Yorker Fiction podcast where authors read writing by other authors that are perfect for getting your intellectual discussion fix in the middle of the daily grind.

2. Delete social media apps off your phone

Do you find that you started with an innocent Twitter check in and 5 hours have gone by and you’re still there? Yes, delete that app. A study showed that you read more when you delete social media apps and I would say this is true for myself. I deleted Facebook and Twitter off my phone in December. It is now July and I have read more books this year than in the peak of my social media addiction, often averaging three a month. The only thing you’re missing out on is the awesome book you are not reading in the time you are reading inane Facebook posts and tweets.

3. Read yourself to sleep

I stand by this. Half an hour before bed, put your brain in wind down mode and curl up with a book. E-readers get a bad rep for keeping your brain awake but I love them. I have put mine in night mode so the screen is dark at all times and not an eye strain. I read fast and efficiently on my reader and I keep the WiFi off so that there are no pings or notifications. These are just some of the steps you have to take to wean yourself off notification addiction, but it is worth it, trust me.

In order to do things you love, you will have to make time and if you love social media and reading, these are some ways you can do both and achieve your Goodreads goal. Happy reading!
