How secure is your printer?

We are all concerned about our security and privacy. We have everything from VPN software installed to decent firewalls and anti-virus software. In fact, these days, Windows comes with a pretty decent protection system installed already. However, how secure is everything else connected to your computer? Yeah, your mouse and keyboard are probably connected via a dedicated connection, but what about the company printer? It sits happily on the network, ready to receive any information from you, happy to print. Okay, not all printing is as seamless, but you get the picture.

You send it all kinds of information, a lot of it confidential as far as your company is concerned. Private data, personal information, and designs that could be vital to the future of your company. What if somebody hacked your printer? At the end of the day, it is just another computer sitting on a network. Easily possible. Specially with no real protection software installed on it. The result? It could be the very device that not only leaks data to an outsider based on what you print, but also has unlimited access to all the other machines on the network. The result? An insecure printer could easily be the difference between a successful company and one that gets involved in all kinds of privacy and security based issues.

HP have started a campaign to raise awareness about printer security. The campaign is labelled ‘The Wolf’, and it stars Christian Slater. Watch the trailer below to get an idea of just how easy it is to fall into the printer security trap.

Of course, HP have done all the research and are looking to make their printers ever so secure. Next time you buy a printer, make sure you check that option too!
