Notebooks are notebooks, right? Not when you are looking at a Filofax notebook. Filofax, a company that has a veteran status in the world of notebooks, know what they are doing, and their classic designs have been working for ages for the market. Here we look at the Filofax notebooks that come in A5 and Pocket sizes, depending on your need.
The first thing that you will notice is that the notebook is bound in leather styled material, giving it a premium feel. It also includes an elastic band to keep it shut and closed, which is quite handy when you pop it in your backpack or are travelling with it. The next thing you will notice is the ring binding on the edge.
As you open it, you are exposed to some high quality sheets of paper interlaced with some separation cards. It comes with 4 of those with 56 sheets of pages, with a few spares as extras to keep you going when you are done.
While most of the pages that are included are lined, you also have a few spares with square sheets too.
The pages come with little cuts on them, which means it is easy to both ‘rip’ them out of the notebook, as well as add them to the notebook.
Closing and opening
One of the things that Filofax are quite proud of is how the notebooks are bound. They tend to shift towards being closed when in standard form, but if they are opened up properly, the notebooks actually prefer to stay opened. The little details that matter, and work well.
Of course, it is often more convenient to use such notebooks in such a way that it is folded back on itself to save space. Once again, the notebook works well in that format.
Paper quality and writing experience
The paper on offer is good, and so is the writing experience. I tried a simple ball point, a gel pen, a fountain pen and a good old fashioned pencil on the notebook, and they all worked well, with no smudging and quick drying, and no blotting of the ink either.
While writing, the paper also provides your hand with a smooth surface to rest on, so it is a nice and comfortable experience overall. Mostly, you can concentrate on your notes and your words, rather than having to worry about the minor but annoying distractions.
