ViewRanger may not be the most popular mapping out there, what with Google Maps mostly making the headlines, closely followed by Apple and Nokia’s efforts, but it is a well known name among the more adventurous types. The app allows outdoor enthusiasts to plan, navigate, and share their walking, cycling, skiing and riding outdoor adventures.
The app is now available on the Amazon AppStore, and it is free. It also available on other Android smart phones and tablets as well. Following the release, it has already lept to number 1 ranking in its category in France, Italy, Spain and UK.
The app provides unlimited access to a range of mapping such as OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap and Bing Ariel Imagery. Maps can be downloaded and stored, meaning you don’t need mobile connection to view, plan or follow the route. The mapping doesn’t stop there, and you can purchase high quality and resolution maps from the likes of Ordnance Survey, IGN France, BKG Germany, etc.
The trail guide library already offers thousands of recommended routes from leading publishers, organizations as well as local experts. Routes include detailed descriptions, photographs, as well as advice on the difficulty, length and elevation of the route. It also features active navigation, which will avoid you getting lost!
And of course, you can share your trail with friends, or recommend it to other users. The companion website provides tools to plan routes, analyse tracks, view maps on PC/Macs and print them. The website is MyViewranger.com .
The ViewRanger app is free to download from Amazon Apps Store. Premium topographic maps can be purchased from within the app using your Amazon account.
The app is also available to download through Google Play and for Apple iPhone and iPad devices. Once purchased, maps can be shared between devices owned by the same user.
