Orbotix, the creators of everyone’s favourite ball, the Sphero have just announced the latest addition to their line up, the Sphero 2B. We would have done the “to be or not to be” joke, but somebody else got there first!
Ah well, the Sphero 2B takes away the ball, and gives you a cylinder, with more power, and the ability to change tyres for different surfaces.
“We believe in play,” says CEO Paul Berberian. “That’s why Sphero products offer many
ways to play. Not just with different apps, but also by inspiring imagination through
robots that are completely programmable.”
The Sphero 2B has also been left open, so future developers can develop their apps around this.
The new cylinderical form factor allows interchangeable parts, and comes with smart accessories for advanced gameplay. Fast and manoeuvrable, and with only two points of contact, it can turn on a dime, launch off a steep incline, and tumble at your wish.
“Sphero has been around for a couple years now and we wanted to take the fun
experience of driving Sphero, redesign it, flip it around, speed it up, and give fans
something completely new,” says cofounder Adam Wilson.
Some of the features of the device include unique driving and multiplayer games, black and white colours, interchange parts, and speed up to 14 ft/s. It works with both iOS and Android, and unlike the Sphero 2 (and 1) it charges with a USB cable instead of induction charging.
