The Blackberry Q10 has been the first Blackberry with a QWERTY keyboard I have properly used for a prolonged period, and I have to say that I am very happy with it so far. I have always been a fan of QWERTY phones, and over the years I have tried the slider ones, and not really liked them. These included the original Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, and the old MDA Vario. However, there have been phones such as the Sony Ericsson P1i that have given me a great performance over its quirky but very efficient keyboard.
So when I took over this phone, and started using it, my thumbs suddenly got into the flow of things. The simple fact of the matter is that as of now, touch screen keyboards are still not good enough. Yes we have SwiftKey with its clever predictions and Swype with the flow, but without a feedback of touch, we just don’t perform as well.
The beauty of the Q10 keyboard, however, is that it takes smart phone keyboards and puts it on a QWERTY. This means that not only do you have the power of the physical keys, but also the intelligence of a smart phone. Double tapping space adds full stops, you have auto-capitalization, and auto correct. The best part is, it is so easy to type, that you just do it all anyway.
So, how has it affected my life. To begin with, I am actually typing away emails on the go a lot more than I would have on the past. I seem to be turning emails almost into long text messages, and doing it on the fly. Sending texts is a breeze, as is using Twitter and other social media.
While I have the phone from Vodafone for yet another week, I am already scared that I will be missing the keyboard once it is gone.
Interestingly, a lot of our readers and followers have constantly commented that they love the design of the phone, but would want Android on it. Is that something Blackberry, or any other manufacturer would like to indulge in? We’d hope so. At least Nokia with their QWERTY phones are trying to fill the void, but it still isn’t Android.
