Review: Kanex mySpot pocket-sized Wi-Fi Connection

Picture the scene… You are travelling on business, and the hotel you have checked into doesn’t have wi-fi throughout. Other than a small, uncomfortable area of the lobby that is covered by a patchy (and potentially insecure) wi-fi hotspot, the only internet connectivity is provided by an Ethernet connection in your room. Unfortunately, being the tech-savvy person that you are, none of your devices: your ultraportable laptop, your tablet or your smartphone, actually has an Ethernet port that you could use.

Thankfully Kanex have a great little gadget up their sleeve for solving just this problem: the mySpot pocket-sized Wi-Fi connection.

I just want to say this now… I love this little device – it is just so easy to use. Simply plug the Ethernet cable into one end and then plug the USB plug into a powered USB port, and boom – you’ve got your very own little wi-fi hotspot.  Once you are up and running, you can secure the connection by easily changing the SSID, adding a password and changing the wi-fi channel by visiting a settings page using your browser.

There really is very little else to say about this device – it is so simple to use but extremely effective, and it could really get you out of a bind if you find yourself in a situation similar to that described above. In my mind, it should be in the laptop bag of every seasoned traveller.
