Vodafone have sent us a ‘Mobile Wi-Fi R205’ device to try out. It is a device they give out on a Pay Monthly basis and it acts as a WiFi modem wherever you go, without having to worry about your phone’s network/data charges as well as internet availability. It works on 3G, and effectively wherever you have Vodafone signal giving you internet, you have mobile internet with you. It basically acts as Wifi hotspot in your pocket, and if you are somebody who likes to take their work to a park or a cafe without having to worry about the internet availability there, this is just the device for you.
While we’ll be publishing a full review in a few days time, we thought we’d give you a quick summary of our first impressions. The device itself is quite light and pocket friendly, though a bit on the thick side. It is very easy to setup, and while you do have an IP which you can type in to access admin details, you don’t really need to as long as the device is working fine and you have internet. All you do is find the Wifi, enter the password given to you (and on the inside of the device) and you’re good to go.
We did some speed test and following were the results:
The preliminary speed tests gave me some good results, going up to 10Mbps in Oxford, at 7 in the morning, and around 6Mpbs for later in the evening.
