As I can’t afford a personal trainer, I am always looking out for something to keep me motivated and active. I stumbled upon Nike Training Club whilst browsing apps one day and figured I had nothing to lose by giving it a go, as the app is free.

The interface is very clear and well designed and above all, it is super simple to use. The menus are very easy to navigate and you can choose your workout based on goals.
It gives you a choice of four goals: ‘Get Lean,’ ‘Get Toned,’ ‘Get Strong,’ or ‘Get Focused,’ with a brief explanation under each heading. Depending which you choose, you may or may not need weights. Once you have chosen your goal, you then get to choose whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced (except with the ‘focused’ work out, which has only one level). This then leads to a choice of several workouts that range between 15 and 45 minutes.
I decided that I would choose a Get Focused workout, and then chose the ‘Better Butt’ out of the 14 choices it listed (I sit at a desk all day and need all the help I can get). It gives you the choice of setting music to your workout, which I didn’t do; and also gives you the option of playing a short video demonstration before each exercise to show the proper exercise technique (brilliant). Figuring that this would be easy because a) I work out regularly, b) the workout I chose was only 15 minutes long and c) you only do each exercise for 1 minute, I touched the screen and got started. It’s worth noting that there is a woman that talks to you and gives you tips throughout the workout, and a countdown timer so that you know exactly how much time you have left on each exercise. Fifteen minutes of jumping, squatting and lunging later I collapsed in a sweaty heap. One day later I could barely get up and down the stairs. It literally kicked my butt.
Each time you do a workout the app saves it, logs the minutes spent and charts your progression, giving you points which lead to various workout rewards including athlete workouts.
I found Nike Training Club motivating and challenging and it fits easily and portably into my lifestyle – my own personal trainer. I am hooked.
