Blackberry Z10 trial: Days 2 and 3

By Sami Mughal

I have to say, after a disappointing first day where I couldn’t figure out how the Blackberry works and what does and what doesn’t and what is available and what isn’t, etc etc, it has actually started to grow on me. There are certain features which are quite useful, while others that are nagging.
I’ll focus on the few I have noted:
– My favourite: Ability to wake up from sleep and unlock screen by just sliding a finger from bottom to upwards on the screen. iPhones and Androids, you have to press the Power button. With this, you just slide a finger, and you’re good to go. A very useful feature. I imagine it means that the battery is constantly being used to monitor that end of the touch screen.
– Swipe down on the lock screen to disable notifications. This also allows you to keep your alarm on or turn it off. A very useful feature for the socially (and email) active person.
– I did notice that the Twitter app itself has only one account. It would also not show me Retweets as well as Favourites. However, there is another app called Launcher for Twitter which does show me those options. A bit unsure, as they both look and feel the same apart from the extra features in the other one.
– On the home screen, you can swipe down to get a menu which allows you enable and disable things such as Wifi, Bluetooth, Sound Mode, etc.
– BlackBerry Hub. This is what having a Blackberry is all about. Once you get used to it, suddenly you are connected to the world, everything is at your fingertips, and you are mean socially active email sending tweet checking machine. This deserves a bit more so I’ll probably cover this in more detail in a future post in the next few days that I have this handset. There is a very small learning curve, but now I can see why all the email active people carry one in their pockets.
– The app side of things still lacks, which is bit of a kerfuffle. However, there are games such as Angry Birds that are available for free on Blackberry like Android, unlike Apple.
So here I am after three days of using the Blackberry. Let us see how it develops.
