Review: Freedom Pro Keyboard

By Sami Mughal

If you are one for small details, this is your product. Since getting my HTC ONE X, and trying to use it as a computer replacement, I have been looking for a keyboard that would pair with the phone, work wirelessly, and be small enough to be carried around.

Physical:

The Freedom Pro Keyboard does it all. It is folding, so it packs to a small size, and comes with a handy leather case, which means you don’t need to worry about scratching it. As you can see by the small pound coin next to it, this is quite small when packed.

When folded out, this opens up to be a regular size keyboard. Yes, you read that right, it is a regular sized keyboard, not a tiny fiddly one.

Once open, you can flick this switch to lock it into position.

It also comes with a very handy phone stand, which folds up and slides inside the keyboard, so you don’t have to worry about carrying it around.

Now that I have covered the physical aspects of the keyboard, and how handy it is, let us come to the functionality and usability of the device.

Interface and power

The device lives on 2xAAA batteries, which are provided. It interfaces with your device via Bluetooth, and that means it can interface with almost everything from iPads, iPhones, Blackberries and Androids, to Windows devices, which includes laptops.

Pairing

The keyboard can be paired with one device at a time, which is fair enough. The pairing process is quite easy. There is a pairing switch on the keyboard, which puts the keyboard into pairing mode. From there on, you can just discover the device, and you are good to do.

Apps and functionality

While I did try the app, the device works equally well without need for any. If you do install the app, it comes with drivers for all devices, and lets you use set shortcuts for different apps and functions on your device. However, I did not even require that, as the rest of the keyboard works that well.

Functionality on Android

The functionality on Android is a little limited in the sense that all the function keys are not programmed to do anything. However, the ESC key works as the BACK button, the I/INTERNET button actually works as the HOME button, and the EMAIL quick access button opens the GMAIL APP. Like I said earlier, if you install the app that comes with the device (or can be downloaded at otadrivers.com), you can set up more shortcuts if required.

Feel

This is where this keyboard really excels. It will take a little getting used to, because some of the buttons are in different positions from the ones you may be used to, but once you do, you can actually use that keyboard to touch type. Since it also the same size as a regular keyboard, there are no qualms there.

Pricing

Verdict

I can’t remember the last time I was so impressed by a gadget that costs under a 100 quid. This device delivers everything it promises. It works perfectly as a keyboard and it is portable. Definitely adding this to my carry everywhere with me list! I have written blog posts as well as emails with it since, and I have not found a reason to complain.

I have to thank www.mobilefun.co.uk for sending this out to review for me. If you want phone accessoriesmobile phone speakers, mobile phone docks,  laptop/notebook accessories, iPod/iPhone/iPad accessories,  or other mobile accessories, MobileFun is a great site to visit. The Freedom Pro Keyboard can be found under the Bluetooth category on their website, among many other great products.
