Review | Aangan’s Episode 6 | Hum TV | Sajal Aly | Ahad Raza Mir

Have you seen Aangan’s episode 6? As you know, Aangan is not going to be on YouTube. In fact will be on Netflix or any other online streaming platform for the digital audience. So if you’ve missed the episode on Thursday at 8 pm, you will have missed out. We’re here to help you recap and revisit (in case you saw it live). So let’s delve into Aangan’s Episode 6.

The story so far:

The story begins with the love affair between Subhan (Ahsan Khan) and Salma (Sonya Hussayn). Subhan is a poor worker boy, Salma is the rich employer’s daughter. The person who calls the shot in the haveli is Maalikan (Zaib Rehman) who is angrily dealing with a philandering husband, Muzaffar (Abid Ali).

So far we know of Muzaffar’s two mistresses, Firdos and Akhtari who also have children with Muzaffar. Muzaffar has two daughters in law played by Madiha Rizvi and Uzma Baig. Muzaffar’s son, Mazhar (Omair Rana) is quite mean to his wife (Madiha Rizvi) and Azhar (Mustafa Afridi) is also not particularly fond of being around his wife and child.

Salma runs off with Subhan, gives birth to Safdar and dies of tuberculosis. Muzaffar’s illegitimate children come to live with them. Some have died, only Israr (Hasan Noman) has have survived. Muzaffar and Azhar’s children have also grown up. In this episode we see these generational conflicts coming to front.

Safdar is now living with Mazhar and his family much to the chagrin of his wife. Najma has gone to study. Israr, Malik Muzaffar’s illegitimate son is also living with Azhar and his family with Maalkan. Mazhar has two daughters, Tehmina (Hira Mani) and Aalia (Mawra Hocane). Tehmina has fallen in love with Safdar and confides about this to Kusum, a Hindu widow living nearby. Kusum is in love with a young man as well who has fallen in love with her despite knowing that Kusum is a widow. In Aangan’s episode 6, Tehmina and Safdar meet each other in the dead of the night (ahem) and Tehmina’s father finds out that Safdar and Tehmina are in love. He approves of the match but asks Tehmina not to meet Safdar secretly.

Chammi (Sajal Aly) has grown up to be a spirited firecracker who gets money from her father, Zafar, back in Hyderabad. She’s full of life, not like the other girls in the house. Chammi is often the cause for lament for Maalikan (Zaib Rehman) who is mostly bed-ridden. Chammi gives her hard-saved money to Jamil to pay for his fees for FA. Jamil (Ahad Raza Mir) is Azhar’s son, attempting to do FA as the revolution roars and Azhar refuses to pay for any of Jamil’s college and education.

In Aangan’s episode 6, Chammi and Jamil speak to each other in verse.

This one scene tho.

Review:

One of Aangan’s consistent flaws is the production design and the vague timeline that it seems to work around. Aangan’s episode 6 also features the same flaw. Mawra Hocane is miscast as Aalia and Chammi’s character is too decked up for her age.

One of the biggest reveals in Aangan at the moment is Chammi’s character. Chammi was incredibly feisty and jumps around the house screaming and shouting. But in this episode we see her vulnerable and broken side which tells you a lot about how she has been brought up. There is a lot of emptiness in her, she is unable to recognize or differentiate between love and passing affection.

Another good scene is an ugly argument that takes place between Mazhar and his wife as Tehmina and Alia watch. The scene is beautifully written and wonderfully executed by the actors.

In a conversation between Malkan and Azhar, it’s shown how resentful Malkan is towards Zafar and the fact that he doesn’t turn around and visit. This however doesn’t stop her from lamenting to Azhar that he doesn’t spend enough time with his family – about which Azhar does not seem to have any regrets.

There is really good chemistry between Ahsan and Hira which could have been used to capitalize on the romance angle. Unfortunately Subhan and Salma’s storyline seemed haphazard and a little too out there. The biggest problem with Aangan is how everyone is extremely decked up and that happens when you want to show a story and not tell the story.
