We’ve all been there. We install an app we don’t really know much about, allow it to work in the background, and voila, it uses up all (or a lot) of our data allowance. Android has a good way to deal with this, and that is that you can set yourself a data limit as well as handy warning limits.
Huawei (and Honor) phones don’t seem to have the same feature. In fact, if you go to your data management screen, you will find that it does not offer that feature at all. Instead, it shows you your daily usage, and that is about it. Poking around the internet didn’t help, but poking around the setting’s definitely did, so here is my guide on how to set this up on your Huawei or Honor phone. I have tested this on the Huawei Mate S, the Huawei G8 and the Honor 7, and it works perfectly on all of them. Ideally it should work for any phone running EMUI 3.1 (and hopefully 3 too, though I haven’t tried it on that yet).
Step 1 – Go to settings!
Click on the settings icon on your pages, or swipe down and hit settings from the Shortcuts tab.
Step 2 – Go to Data Traffic Management
Click on Data Traffic Management under settings. If you can’t find it, make sure the top of the Settings page is selected on All rather than General.
Step 3 – Hit Package settings
In there, you select Package settings, and you should see the following screen.
Here you actually get the Android Data Traffic manager, but a super version of it. You can set daily limits, start the day of the month for your package, disable data if you go over limit to save you money, and set various limits and reminders. This is where all the settings are, and while this is a round about way, it works well.
In case there is no ‘Package Settings’
In that case, click on the Gear Icon in the top right corner.
That should give you a similar set of options.
In there, click on the Total Monthly Data Available setting:
This should allow you to set the monthly data available option.
PS
Just to let you know that the screenshots are from an Huawei G8, which has an EE and 3 SIM in, and the data is set to run on 3, which is SIM in slot 2.
The second set of screenshots, in the second case are from the Huawei P9.
The option Package Settings does not exist on my Honor 7 (Emui version 3.1)
Oh no. Have you tried asking @UKHonor. They are very good.
Same here, my G8 (RIO) has’nt got the Package Settings either, I’m on 3.1 as well. Only difference with your model is the fact that my model is single SIM.
Have you enabled other stuff or changed other settings?
Cheers!
Now i just want to disable the data limit. How can i do?
If the initial setup worked, just repeat the steps and disable it
There is no option to disable package settings
What version of EMUI are you on? It seems like the suggestion only works on the later versions.
I want to disable this package settings.. Please help… My data connection is not working now because of ths.
Hi, this is one of the most annoying aspects of using this feature. An easy way to ‘disable’ it is to raise your monthly allowance to a huge number such as 20 GB
I would also like to do this. Please tell me how.
Did you figure out how to Disable data usage? I’m having a hard time.
It’s June 2017 and this is still an issue. I have the latest P10 and updated to the latest EMUI.
It’s kind of a stupid design for a UI that allows a user to configure something and not allow to undo or revert it. There is no way to disable data limit once you have set it. I wonder what came to Huawei’s mind to make a stupid mistake like this that’s been there remaining unfixed for a very long time. Let’s all report it to Huawei please so that they may include a fix on the next update.
Just look on the Package settings screen shot, it doesn’t work, I am referring at the data reminder. I am looking for some directions because when I change the daily limit, the monthly limit takes the same value and the other way around. Found absolutely nothing here.
Hi Adi,
Thanks for pointing this out. I have just updated the post to show a new kind of option available in the latest software.
Please check if this one works for you.
Best regards,
Sami
I have Huawei Mate 7 in France and I neither see the ‘package setteings’ nor the little ‘gera icon’ and my phone’s running on EMUI 3.1!!!
Hi Ravi, can you post a picture? Maybe there is a difference in country based settings. Sometimes you don’t have a gear icon, and instead three dots. Do they appear?
Ps, the gear icon appears on EMUI 4.1, so maybe it didn’t in the last version?
Hi
I have a P8, not the lite. I do not have any of that options. what could be the reason, or help?
Hi. Do you have the latest EMUI?
EMUI 3.1
Aha. I am on 4.1. Have you tried updating the software? Is the option available?
Scanned for updates now, no updates.
Hmm. I’ll try and find something for you. Seems like the option wasn’t there in earlier solutions. Have you enabled developer settings?
I have reached data limit before, I then go in it, and set the limit higher, but can’t find it anywhere. Yes, I have enabled it, but have not played around there yet.
Hmm, yeah, that was the weird thing with the original EMUIs.
Here is a way to update your software, but unofficially, so do it at your own risk:

Thank you. I would prefer not to. I will pop in to my closest support centre. Thank you
How to set the start date of my bill or data plan?
Annoyingly it only seems to allow you to set it from the first of every month.
Thank you, that was my question too.
Strange how their seems to be no way of choosing the data cycle date, this pretty much makes the feature useless. Anyone know of a way?
Does It count wifi data?
Hi Carlos. No, it only counts data through your SIM.
Huawei is really something, can’t access data management to change cycle or to set limit UNLESS you download Activity Launcher or AVG antivirus. It really is something… shitty.
Same here. Huawei G8 (single SIM), RIO-L01C432B160 (Austria, no brand).
The only way to adjust I found is
Install activity launcher (by Adam Szalkowski) from playstore. No root required.
Under actiitves select all activities.
Select Settings (Einstellungen)
Search for data usage (Datennutzung)
Here you will find the options you need.
Chilli
…work like a charm, thanks 😉
Hi my GR5 does not work with any of these options and I cannot find anything online to help me, thanks!
How to disable this feature
And now how to disable the data limits?
The gear icon does not exist and no package editing option
this is stupid
