More than half of the UK struggles to get to sleep night after night

People are more increasingly struggling to sleep as quickly as they should be. This could be an indicator of their poor health according to the findings of new research from Cambridge Sleep Sciences.

The sample of the research constituted of 2000 UK consumers aged 18+. It was conducted by Vitreous World, finding that over half (52%) of the people take longer than 20 minutes to get to sleep. Moroever, a third of the people take between 20 to 45 minutes. Nearly a fifth (19%) take over 45 minutes.

The national body for sleep health, The Sleep Council, has stated that it should normally take a person 10 to twenty minutes to fall asleep. It also states that the time it takes us to drop off to sleep at night is a key indicator of our sleep health according to research carried out with Northumbria University in 2018.

The study concluded that younger people take longer to take fall asleep as compared to older people. 60% of people under 45 take more than 20 minutes to get to sleep compared to 44% of people over 45.

Another worrying factor about younger people is their lack of sleep. 77% of people under the age of 45 said yes to whether lack of sleep landed them on bad decisions, calling in sick or having mental health issues, which is quite alarming. Only 23% of those aged over 45 related to these issues.

“It’s interesting that older people do not seem to experience the same impacts from lack of sleep or poor quality sleep as today’s young people,” says Dr Julian Stone, CEO, Cambridge Sleep Sciences. “This suggests that younger people have either started suffering from poorer sleep, or they have begun to find it harder to cope with tiredness. Lack of good quality sleep can impact physical and mental health, as well as productivity.”

Cambridge Sleep Sciences has come up with the SleepHub to help people fight the sleeping issues. It is a science powered product that uses beats and pulses to re-train the brain to revert to natural sleep cycles. The product offers customisable sleep modes and if it does not work for you then you can always avail the 60-day money-back guarantee policy. The modes include:

  • Deep Sleep: An eight-hour sleep programme including an 18-minute wake upcycle and alarm.
  • Easy Sleep: A customised sleep programme for those who have a set amount of time to sleep. This setting automatically adjusts the Deep Sleep programme to deliver the optimum sleep pattern depending on how users have between going to bed and waking up.
  • Fall Asleep: A two-hour sleep programme to guide users into a deep sleep with optional wake-up alarm.
  • Power Nap: Guides users into an energising nap with optional wake-up alarm. You can choose from 30, 45 and 60-minute sleep programmes.

“With increasingly demanding lifestyles and everyday worries, the brain can gradually fall out of sync with natural sleep cycles. By understanding the science behind a good night’s sleep, we have been able to develop a product that helps the brain return to those natural sleep cycles and improves health and wellbeing,” concludes Stone.

Cambridge Sleep Sciences aims to improve health and wellbeing through the power of natural sleep. SleepHub is the company’s first product and is now available for pre-order from SleepHub.com
