Huawei launches new flagship smartwatch, the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro

Huawei Consumer Business Group today announced its latest smartwatch, the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro. This new launch marks the latest addition to Huawei’s award-winning Watch GT 2 Series, one of the best-selling smartwatches in the world. With a rugged yet premium design, advanced sports tracking, professional health monitoring, two-week battery life and wireless charging, the new Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro is set to be a big hit with fitness fanatics and casual users alike.

Huawei has revealed the Watch GT 2 Pro in full detail. Its maker describes it as having a “rugged” design; despite this, it is apparently composed of high-end materials such as “skin-friendly” ceramic and titanium. The OEM also claims that its display-protection is enhanced with sapphire, as is that of its all-new heart-rate monitor: something that may have us wishing it luck in durability tests.

This crystal covers a 1.64-inch AMOLED screen that can show up to 100 sports modes and 200 watch-faces. Huawei also notes that it can be simply tapped against a mobile device to set a gallery photo as a face, although this will only apply to own-brand phones running EMUI 11 or later.

There are 100+ sports modes available on the watch, although most of these will be simple HR tracking and duration. There’s built-in GPS and even coaching modes for running, with guided HIIT sessions for all abilities, and Firstbeat’s advanced analytics for VO2 Max and recovery time from runs. Like the Huawei Watch GT2, there’s also stress tracking.

But there are some new features exclusive to the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro. A new golf driving range mode monitors swing tempo and swing speed when practising. It’s a shame there’s no native golf tracking, and being Lite OS, there are no third-party options as you’d get from Apple Watch or Wear OS. There’s also a skiing mode, which covers most snow-sport disciplines, with dedicated data on descents. Huawei has added a much bigger focus on the outdoors, with a back-to-start mode which gives you a heading back to the beginning of a GPS tracked route.

What makes the Watch GT 2 Pro very interesting is the fact that it supports proper wireless charging. This means that you don’t need to fiddle with finicky proprietary chargers to actually charge the watch. This addresses one of the most common pain points with smartwatches in general. With wireless charging gaining popularity over the years, and the fact that several high-end flagships can also reverse wireless charge, you should have fewer situations where your watch dies on you and you do not have access to the watch’s charger. Huawei is also claiming 14 days of use and up to 30 hours of use with GPS, so the Watch GT 2 Pro appears to be pretty sorted, at least on paper.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro (RRP: £299.99) comes in two variations: Night Black (Sport Edition) and Nebula Grey (Classic Edition), available to purchase from Huawei Store and selected retailers from the 5th October. Customers purchasing on or before 20th Oct can also claim a free pair of Huawei FreeBuds 3 (via redemption).
