Connectivity

Generally speaking, they work well with iPhones as well as Androids. While I haven’t tried them with a PC, my experience with a Mac (MacBook Pro running Catalina) was okay. While the sound works well, the microphones appear but do not capture any sound. This obviously means that in this current era of WFH with plenty of online meetings, these cannot serve as the device of choice if you’re using a Mac.

It should be noted that being Bluetooth 5 makes them fairly robust when it comes to being future proof!

Setup

The setup is fairly simple and obvious. The earbuds go into pairing mode when you take them out of the box, and as long as you are in pairing mode on your device, you can pair them.

You can pair just the one, and it works well. However, if you are used to moving from one earbud to the other, or are used to using only one, you are better off pairing both of them. To pair the other, just take it out on its own from the pack, and a few seconds later it will go into pairing mode.

To pair to a new device is more of a hassle. You have to press and hold on the ‘touch’ area for over 6 seconds and then it goes into pairing mode.

Sound Quality

As mentioned already, the sound is great. They offer good isolation, and a good, true sound. A lot of in-ear buds are generally tuned for a heavier bass. Not these guys. No, they give you a more true sound, meaning it isn’t all beats. In a way, a credit to Skullcandy for not hiding behind a heavier bass.

As far as the microphone goes, it is reasonably sensitive and works well during calls made via my phone.

The sound quality works well whether you’re sitting at a desk or running along, making these quite good for all sorts of uses.

Ease of use

Generally, I am not a big fan of touch controls. Having slightly longer hair, I have found that certain earbuds will think I am touching them when my hair gets sweaty. I haven’t noticed this with these yet, but it does mean that I am slightly cautious.

Overall, they are fairly ‘pop in ear and go’ type once you are paired, so all good. However, Skullcandy have gone away from the traditional touch controls, where you touch to play/pause, etc. On these, a single tap adjusts volume (right = up, left = down), a double tap gives you a play/pause, etc. This means that muscle memory doesn’t work as well as you’d hope.

Fit and comfort

They fit very well, and come with an attachment that gives you a more secure fit. A bit of running, jumping or exercise and you have absolutely no fears regarding their fit. They’ll definitely stay in.

I am generally quite fussy around comfort, but an hour or two of wearing these was perfectly fine for me. The slightly smaller design goes a long way here.

Find them when they are lost

I love the Tile connectivity that Skullcandy have thrown in. I ended up using it on day 1, when these managed to fall behind my table! When used, they squeak a high pitched noise that lets you locate them. It connects with both earbuds individually, so works well.
