Did I Really Need New Clothes For My YouTube Channel?

COVID-19 has hit us all hard, in one way or the other. While some people have lost and are still losing their loved ones, others suffered in one way or the other. There are no second thoughts about the economic recession that has struck everyone alike. It is probably not hard to believe that the economic recession is also one of the worst outcomes of this global pandemic. This why many of us have either lost our jobs or are on the verge of it. Well, I am also one of those.

After losing my job, I was at a complete loss. Luckily finances were not a major issue but staying busy and motivated was certainly a big deal. I thought it was high time I pursued the creative endeavours I had been wanting to do for quite some time but was unable earlier because of my tedious work hours. I started my own YouTube channel, in the spur of the moment actually. To my surprise, it kicked off. People were loving my work and I knew that this was the time for me to take it seriously.

Developing content every now and then is not easy. But the quest does not end here. There is a lot more that goes into running a small YouTube channel. Considering it visual medium, I knew I had to take care of the optics too. I had to balance my frail phone on a tripod stand, edit after multiple retakes, and finally promote the product when it was launched. I had to do it all by myself.

Do you think that’s it? There is more to my story.

Being both minimalist and anti-social, I never really had a huge wardrobe. How do I make all the videos in the same black T-shirt and pants? Isn’t YouTube primarily a visual medium? If it is important to get the lighting right, is it also not important not to repeat the same visual over and over? Will being this casual work for the camera and the audiences?

I was constantly questioning myself. But then, I had to take the plunge. I had to make the most of whatever was available to me. The reaction and response could be sorted later.

And you know what? The channel worked. In only 45 days, I have over one thousand subscribers. My videos are well-received and widely watched. The amount of love that I receive is worth all the hard work that goes into creating content on a regular basis. My old clothes did not matter to the audiences. They only wanted meaningful content (or at least, they told me so). Sometimes, the want and need for material are just in our head. It is a conflict from within, not from the outside.
