LG to unveil 2020 8K TV line-up at CES 2020

LG

Days before tech manufacturers and media flock to Las Vegas for CES, LG has unveiled eight 8K TVs for 2020. The lineup (which doesn’t include this wacky roll-down display) aims to take on Samsung in the budding 8K TV market.

LG’s new 8K offerings include two OLED models, which measure 77 and 88 inches, respectively. The other six sets feature LCD displays and range between 65 and 75 inches in size.

The press release did not include information about prices or availability. It’s unlikely all the new sets will cost $30,000 like the stunning LG 88-Inch Z9 8K OLED TV. But considering Samsung’s 55-inch Q900R QLED 8K TV sells for a steep $2,199, we imagine these new LG TVs will still sport a premium price tag. (Although an attainable 8K model is on our CES TV wish list.)

The TVs come packed with a host of new features, such as;

  • AI-based 8K upscaling – delivers vivid and accurate 8K images by analyzing the content and applying Quad Step Noise Reduction and frequency-based Sharpness Enhancer to increase lower resolution content to near 8K perfection.
  • Auto genre selection – recognizes the type of content being watched and automatically applies the ideal picture settings, guaranteeing the best image quality among four genres: movie, sports, standard and animation.
  • Picture Pro – capable of recognizing faces and text on the screen, fine-tuning and sharpening each to produce more natural skin tones, well-defined facial features, and clearer, more readable characters.
  • Sound Pro – analyses and classifies the audio of content among five categories –music, movies, sports, drama or news – for clearer voices and richer, more textured background sound.

Regardless of resolution disagreements, LG’s newly announced TVs should offer much better support for 8K content. The TVs now support HEVC, VP9, and AV1 content natively, which is notable when its previous 8K TV required an external decoder box to decode the YouTube-backed AV1 codec. The TVs are also equipped with HDMI inputs that can handle 60 fps content at 8K resolution.

Internally LG’s TVs are equipped with the company’s new Alpha 9 Gen 3 processor, which it says uses deep learning technology to optimize both picture and sound quality. The processor can upscale video to 8K and audio to 5.1 surround sound, and can also recognize faces and text on-screen, tweaking picture quality to improve the appearance of both.

Support for Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants returns from last year, as does HomeKit and AirPlay 2 compatibility. LG also says that the TVs will be upgraded with Alexa far-field voice compatibility in the future and that the TVs can be used to monitor and control supported IoT devices from their dashboard.

LG’s 2020 8K TVs also feature a new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI Processor that the company says optimizes picture and sound quality for all types of content through AI-based upscaling. LG’s new 8K lineup will be on show during CES 2020.
