Nokia to transform Finland’s nationwide smart grid for better support of renewable energy

Nokia has announced that the Fingrid has selected the company in order to build an IP/MLS network. This has been decided to support the digital transformation of Finland’s national electrical grid. Finland’s national transmission system operator, Fingrid, will be using this network to operate 120 high-voltage substations and control 14,600km of power transmission across the country. This initiative has taken place due to the needed management of the fastly growing adoption of variable distributed energy resources, such as wind, solar and micro-generation using bioenergy.

Finland is one of Europe’s leading users of renewable energy. As a result, the country’s power transmission network needs frequent and constants upgrades in order to stay on top of the changing character of energy generation. Solar and wind generation, for example, require a much more agile and automated grid to manage the variable, two-way power flows by automatically ramping and balancing inputs and outputs. As a result, new distributed energy resources management systems are required. These new systems need to have a highly secure and reliable communications system in order to control, monitor, coordinate and manage the distributed energy assets. 

Nokia’s mission-critical IP/MPLS network solution has been deployed by transmission system operators worldwide — supporting these new grid applications along with other critical ones, such as supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA), teleprotection and current differential systems, which demand stringent control of latency and jitter. This project is in partnership with NetNordic, a longstanding Nokia channel partner.
