D-Link European Insights on women taking over the family electronics

D-Link, the head of the smart home, has revealed insights about the purchase and use of gadgets and electronics in the modern smart home. According to the search results, around 55% of the women in Europe claim to take the lead on tech in their respective families. Moreover, international research has found that voice-activated smart speakers have created a boost in confidence with Europeans to buy, use and own consumer electronics

Moving forward the research from D-Link also found out that with the advent of using voice-enabled smart speakers at homes such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod, millions of people throughout Europe have found a new boost in technology confidence. The results show that a solid 67% of women pay regard to their voice-enabled smart speaker for the increased confidence they feel in technology, including their family’s confidence. 

The research conducted by D-Link includes surveys of 8000 people in European countries like the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. The results show that over 480000000 of Europeans (which makes 65%) today either own or have plans of buying a voice-enabled smart speaker for their home.  Of this, it is more than 61% of women in Europe who own or plan to buy a voice-enabled speaker in the near future.

More into the results

The study conducted by D-Link also found out that on average, it makes 55% of Europen women who take the lead in buying and using the gadgets for their families. Italian women were found to be the most tech-savvy in their homes as they formed for more than around 62% who buy and use technology the most. The Italian women are followed by German and Spanish women who make up 59% followed by France (54%) and then the women of the UK (37%)

Confidence boost and benefits of technology

The frequent use of technology at homes has not only added to the confidence in the technology. Around 72%, which makes up three-quarters of people believe it is their voice-enabled smart speaker that has benefited their lives in one way or the other. This includes 70% of women throughout the continent. 

Half of Europeans collectively (50%) thank voice-enabled smart speakers for saving them time, while the same amount (50%) also believe that their device has helped to make everyday tasks easier. Around one third (33%) of Europeans are enjoying a calmer home environment, claiming that their Amazon Alexa, Google Home Assistant or Apple Homepod have made certain situations less stressful.

The area where smart speakers excel

When exploring the most common uses for voice-activated smart speakers, D-Link found that a majority of Europeans (71%) mostly use their devices to listen to music, the radio or podcasts. This is followed by checking the weather (57%), like an alarm clock or timer (52%), to catch up on the latest news and current affairs (52%) and asking funny questions (41%). Of this, the researchers discovered that more than two-in-five people across Europe (42%) use their voice-enabled smart speaker in collaboration with other smart home devices, such as smart plugs, routers, home security cameras and leak detection devices.

Commenting on the research, Kevin Wen, President of D-Link Europe: “From these findings, it is interesting to see the impact that accessible technology and consumer electronics have on the modern home. From smart devices that make homes safer and more secure to technology that enables  control over our home from wherever we are, through to devices we can power using our voice, more accessible technology is really changing the dynamics of the home – and beyond – for the better.”
