To empower the Huawei Mate 30 series Huawei has launched world’s first 5G SoC

Huawei Kirin 990

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) delivered a keynote speech titled “Rethink Evolution” at the IFA. During the speech, Huawei uncovered the latest flagship Kirin 990 series: Kirin 990 and its 5G version.

“Kirin 990 (5G) is the world’s first 5G SoC, and it will enable end-users to access superb 5G connectivity experience one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialization,” said Richard. “To meet users’ requirements for enhanced 5G experiences in the 5G era, Kirin 990 (5G) has been fully upgraded in terms of performance and power efficiency, AI computing, and ISP, extending mobile phone experiences to a new level.”

The Kirin has been designed to bring better, elevated performance, energy efficiency and AI capabilities and photography for the already existing users with 5G capabilities to make the experience even better with the advent of Krin 990 (5G).

Ultra-fast 5G connectivity: the first of its kind

The Kirin 990 5G is built on a 7nm Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) lithography process, while the 4G variant loses out on the EUV lithography process and is instead built on the same TSMC 7nm as the Kirin 980. Huawei claims that the Kirin 990 5G with its integrated Balong 5G modem is smaller than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 with the X50 5g modem. The chip also supports full-frequency 5G Non-StandAlone (NSA) and StandAlone (SA) architectures, along with full frequency TDD/FDD bands. The Balong 5000 integrated modem allows this flagship SoC to achieve a peak downlink rate of 2.3Gbps and a peak uplink of 1.25Gbps.

Innovative NPU

Aside from implementing the 5G modem, the biggest change in the Kirin 990 is going to be the NPU or Neural Processing Unit. As a company, we won’t see Huawei promoting this change that much, because ultimately it will be transparent to the consumers, but for the technical side of things, it’s a big step.

In the Kirin 970 and Kirin 980 hardware, Huawei sub-licenced a machine learning hardware design from Cambricon Technologies, which was spun out from a university research project in China. Huawei ultimately invested in the company, although the hardware license wasn’t exclusive, but Huawei got access to the leading-edge design and was afforded customization options. With the Kirin 990, that partnership with Cambricon disappears, and the company is implementing its internal Da Vinci architecture.

Power-efficiency and top-notch photography

The NPU has also been put to work with the ISP for better image quality and additional features as well. One of them is the Dual-Domain video and photo noise reduction. And speaking of video, the chipset is capable of recording 8K HDR videos at 30fps.

To help with processing and power consumption, Huawei also introduced the new Kirin A1 co-processor for dealing with Bluetooth connectivity, ultra-low-power applications, and audio decoding. It’s an independent power management unit.

Other releases

Huawei also announced their flagship series upgrade with the launch of Huawei P30 Pro as well as FreeBuds 3. The upgraded HUAWEI P30 Pro continues the HUAWEI P series’ graceful design and innovative imaging technology and offers two trend-setting designs and colors created by a matte surface sanding process. They are a deep, Mystic Blue reminiscent of the sky reflecting the sea, and Misty Lavender akin to a beach under the sunset. the new flagship wireless earphones of the year use a delicate earphone design and come with a unique, round case. HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 provides users with more comfortable wearing experience and a nice grip. It has two color options: black and white
