Param’s mom gets back to college after twenty-three years of sacrifice and putting the family first

Sacrifice is considered to be the essence of the fabric of a desi woman. No matter what a woman has achieved in life she is expected to give up on everything else in life and take up the roles assigned to her by society. If she is a daughter, the society wants her to give up on every goal and dream she has had in life and marry the man not of hers but her parents’ dreams. If she is a wife, everyone wants her to give up on her professional achievements and everything else she has ever achieved in life and toss round parathas like a pro. If she is a mother, these sacrifices are meant to take another turn altogether.

Many women in our society stop pursuing their professional pursuits once they become mothers. Their life takes a completely new turn. Their life is no more theirs but their child’s. More than the child’s well being, it is about the role assigned by society to a mother. Any woman taking good care of her well being and pursuing a life of her own despite balancing the responsibilities of motherhood is still looked down upon. Most of the people from my generation have seen such mothers who were an embodiment of sacrifice and self-negation. There are also many cases where the women became widows but could not remarry because of the societal pressures if they had children.

Twitter is a beautiful place when it is about getting to know inspiring stories from all over the world. A user Param Singh shared the photos of his mother who had sacrificed her nursing career for twenty-three years for her family and is now back to school. The emotional son was overwhelmingly proud of his mother as he shared her photo in a classroom and with her student card.

This is a heartening post to see in a society where women kill their dreams before death. It is inspiring to see women who do not give up on their dreams. Here it is also important for the families to support women in the family and give them back the same strength which they give their families giving up on their dreams. Women of today have started taking charge of their fate and realizing that only a happy mother can be a good mother. They have realized that taking care of the family should not happen at the cost of one’s own dreams and personalities.

Sacrifice is a beautiful thing but only if it is two way and does not kill a person day by day. It is important to balance the domestic and social responsibilities with one’s own role in the economic progress of society.
