Dealing with Summer Pests

Summer pests can simply be annoying, but they can also be a danger to your health. That’s why it’s important to find out more information about the risks and the best way to deal with pests, whether they are summer ones or winter ones.

The simple fact is that there are more pests in summer because of the warmer weather. The most common summer pests include mosquitoes, wasps, flies, termites, and ticks.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to deal with summer pests, regardless of which ones they are:

Avoid Dawn & Dusk

If possible you should avoid being outside at dawn or dusk, this is the time when many summer pests are most active as it’s not too hot. Mosquitoes particularly love this time of day.

Avoiding being outside unless you have to dramatically reduce the issues associated with summer pests.

Keep Covered

It’s hard to be covered in clothes all day in the summer but you should certainly stay covered up if you need to go out at dawn or dusk, no exposed skin makes it very hard for any pests to bite you.

In the daytime, you should use suitable insect repellant to keep the pests away. But don’t forget your sun cream as well.

Have An Inspection

This can help to keep them away from you and your family.

Clean Up

All pests need to consume food and water. You need to eliminate these so that the pests are not attracted to your home. Start by cleaning down all the surfaces in your home, making sure you remove every trace of food.

You should also wash dirty dishes straight away, keep your food in sealed containers and have a lid on your bin.

Then, take a look at what water is sat around. This may be in the sink from a leaking tap, or a small puddle outside thanks to an overflowing drain or leaking water butt.

Any source of standing water gives a pest somewhere to drink and potentially somewhere for a mosquito to lay eggs.

Cleaning up should also extend outside of the home, remove clutter from your garden and make sure plants are too close to your walls, this will discourage pests from coming to your house.

Door Screening

You’re going to want your windows and doors open to get the fresh, warm air in. However, you don’t want the bugs in. To prevent this being an issue simply fit screens against each of the windows and doors, the air can still flow through but the bugs won’t be able to get in an disturb you.

You can also add rosemary or peppermint oil to the door and window frames, mosquitoes and other insects are not keen on this smell and will stay away.
