Changing a Faulty Euro-cylinder the DIY Way

In most cases, the need for a UPVC lock change stems from a faulty Euro-cylinder.

To get the right replacement, you need to determine the type of UPVC door lock you have by checking its measurements. Two measurements are required, the PZ measurement and the backset measurement.

The PZ measurement is between the centre of the circular part of the keyhole and the centre of the square spindle. The spindle is the point of connection of your door handle. The backset measurement is the distance from the edge of the lock plate to the centre of the circular part of the keyhole.

You can determine the length of the locking cylinder by measuring its width, from the exterior keyhole to the interior keyhole.

With the right replacement, it’s time to take out the faulty lock. Open your door and unscrew the retaining screw. The screw is at the faceplate on the side of the door and parallels with the keyhole and the bottom of the cylinder. It holds the lock in place.

Once the retaining screw is out, put the key in the lock and rotate it in a 20 –degree angle. You should feel the cylinder release. Pull it out.

To install the new cylinder, you need to put the key in the cylinder and back into the empty socket. Rotate the key in a 20-degree angle to align the inner latch of the lock with the body of the cylinder. Finally, secure and tighten the retaining screw.

If you have a problem measuring the old lock, take the old lock to the locksmith and get a new lock that matches it.

Other situations that Call for a UPVC Lock Change

Although a faulty Euro-cylinder is the most common problem, it may not always be the case.

A UPVC door that is failing to lock may be as a result of a broken mechanism. There are different points of failure within the locking mechanism that may be to blame. A professional locksmith can advise you on whether to replace the “gearbox” which is cheaper or replace the entire mechanism.

The door may have dropped causing a misalignment in the locking points with the keeps. This is a simple adjustment issue. Replace or tighten the door hinges and realign the keeps until the door fits well. To ensure it’s an adjustment issue and not mechanical, the lock should work with the door open, if it fails, call a locksmith.

Not every fault with your UPVC door lock requires a locksmith. Unless your door has a broken mechanism, this easy guide can help you carry out a UPVC lock change and have your door properly securing your home again.
