Mashal Khan and the beasts

Two years have passed. Much more to go… as callous and insensitive it may sound the truth cannot be concealed. Yes, many more years will pass by, just like these two years. Mashal Khan’s lynching will continue being one of the darkest incidents of Pakistan’s history. Well, I know the competition is tough and darkness is just a residue in this black hole.

Shall we mourn Mashal Khan’s mob lynching or shed some tears over Shama and Shahzad burnt alive by a mob over blasphemy accusations? Shall we bury our heads in the sand for Aasia Bibi who is unable to be set free despite being proven innocent by the court or raise our hands for Salman Taseer whose only crime was raising his voice for an innocent woman? Do we have the heart to say a word for Professor Khalid Hameed murdered by his own student?

Too many unanswered queries for a day…

I know I am not lucky enough to be a pigeon who at least has the luxury of closing her eyes upon the sight of eminent misery. Despite trying my level best to sway away and keep myself occupied with my assignments and roasting chicken in a far off hemisphere, I can not keep myself away from Mashal Khan’s probing face appearing on my mind’s screen.

I will never be able to forget his mother’s words

‘When I held Mashal’s hand to kiss him, his fingers were crushed.’

What was his real ‘sin’? Exposing the real side of Abdul Wali Khan University’s administration?

They say that an innocent’s blood doesn’t get wasted. They need to revise their notions maybe.

LYes, today Mashal Khan is much bigger than what he was during his life. But did he ask to be killed in cold blood? Did he seek this ‘greatness’ thrust upon him by a mob of human looking beasts?

Today we hold rallies and protests remembering Mashal Khan. We will not let his name die even if we could not protect his body. This year rallies were conducted through the length and breadth of Pakistan to commemorate the day when Mashal was stripped, beaten to death and then thrown off the second storey of the hostel building. Even after he died his family was constantly threatened for life. Mashal Khan’s brave father Iqbal Lala has vowed not to rest till his last breath and stands strong like an iron wall. Ever tried looking into his eyes? I dare not. You will melt into a puddle of mud and blood in repentance.

But the question still lies if we will ever be able to prevent more Mashal Khans being prey to this brutality? Are we the common people still left with the power to change the use of religion for anyone’s personal malicious designs?

This is a cycle, ladies and gentlemen. This is a cycle: a vicious cycle. It goes round and round and round.
