Smell to the Rescue! Meet Invi, the Self-Defense Bracelet

Now, more than ever, there is widespread awareness about the prevalence of sexual violence in our communities. While some are developing and delivering personal safety campaigns, others have turned to science for a solution. Researchers at Invi have developed an innovative technology for self-defense by “using smell to repel”.

Self-defense

According to their groundbreaking research, the Smell Invi self-defense emits a specific odour that causes a significant decrease in sexual arousal. While researching the impact of smell on sexual arousal, men were exposed to the malodorant developed by Invi or an odourless substance while watching a pornographic video. Sexual arousal was then measured through both self-reports and penile circumference (state of erection). The disgusting odour was released when participants were already sexually aroused and it resulted in a significant decrease of both mental and physical arousal compared to participants in the control group. The study’s findings suggest that smell can be used effectively as a self-defense method in situations of sexual assault. Team Invi is committed to fighting sexual violence by empowering people with a nonviolent self-defense solution. The Invi Bracelet can be purchased online at www.invi.world and a portion of the revenues is dedicated to research initiatives and social programs (e.g. their community program to protect women and children in the DRC/Congo).

Note: I feel skeptical about such ideas that put the burden of safety on the victim and away from the aggressor. The concept of consent is completely missing! Anyone, men or women, should not have to wear amulets, rings, or bracelets to ‘dial down’ their potential aggressor’s state of arousal. What is needed is personal responsibility as well as respect for the other individual’s comfort.
