Huawei P30 Pro reviews

PARIS – March 26, 2019 – DxOMark has just published the results of its in-depth analysis of the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone main and front cameras.

The Huawei P30 Pro comes with a triple-camera setup (quad-camera, if you count the time-of-flight sensor) that offers many improvements over its predecessors. The primary camera comes with a 1/1.7 40Mp quad sensor that produces 10Mp image output. The 27mm-equivalent lens comes with an f/1.6 aperture and is optically stabilized—a first for this sensor size in a smartphone. But arguably the most exciting innovation is the stabilized tele-camera that uses folded optics to achieve a 5x optical zoom factor (125mm equivalent).

With a DxOMark Mobile score of 112, the Huawei P30 Pro is the new number one in our ranking and achieves this feat by building on an outstanding Photo score of 119 points.

Compared to previous Huawei models, the most obvious improvements to the rear cameraare in the areas of bokeh and zoom, where the P30 Pro sets new benchmarks. That said, the P30 Pro performs well in almost all our test categories. Exposure is good down to extremely low light levels, and in challenging backlit situations, the camera is intelligent enough to focus prioritize subject exposure over the background. Dynamic range is not quite as wide as it was on the Mate 20, but it’s still pretty good.

Achieving an overall DxOMark Selfie score of 89 points, the Huawei P30 Pro puts in a solid performance, with key strengths of good exposure, wide dynamic range, and accurate color rendering.

Performance from the front cameras isn’t quite as impressive, but the P30 Pro offers significant improvements over the P20 Pro. Exposure across stills and video is excellent, and the P30 Pro boasts some of the best HDR capabilities currently available for selfie shooters. Color is another strength, with pleasant rendering as well as accurate white balance, and bokeh simulation is good, if not perfect.
