Excellent Reasons Why You Should Be Participating in the Aurat March Today!

Aurat March is a march for rights happening in Lahore for Women’s Day. Many actors and activists have tweeted in support of the march and are encouraging people to attend.

“For Sana Cheema, the Italian Pakistani girl who was murdered by her family in Gujrat but whose father and brother have now been acquitted. For all the honour crimes that never get proven. For women who continue to die at the hands of their families. #WhyIMarch,” says Sabahat Zakariya

I march because women are insecure economically, socially, politically, & physically. Their work isn’t valued (paid or unpaid), they face violence at home & outside, they’re restricted by their families & communities & yet I am still constantly asked !  – said Nida Kirmani

“Pakistani singer, actor, model and artist Meesha Shafi tweeted, I march so our daughters don’t have to be silent and scared to speak the truth and claim their rights! #HumAurtein.

Another activist, Fareiha Aziz tweeted, “ So we all get some breathing space. Free from confines of patriarchy which affect all genders. Free of gender roles & honour codes that create misery & often lead to violent outcomes. So we can connect & share sense of togetherness as we did last time.

Why Aurat March is Important:

Each year thousands of women in Pakistan suffer at the hands of domestic violence. Many women are killed in the name of honor. Many others face various kinds of discrimination at the hands of the patriarchal status quo. Aurat March was also organized last year. This year it also hopes to raise awareness about gender disparity and gender discrimination against women.

Aurat March 2019:

This year the March will be held in Lahore and the manifesto talks about social justice, implementation of labor rights. It also asks for the due diligence in the Sexual Harassment at the Workplace Act 2010 and provision of maternity leave and day care.

More power to you all!
