Review | Cheekh | Episode 07 | Saba Qamar | Bilal Abbas

Cheekh’s Episode 07 has recently aired. Cheekh stars Bilal Abbas and Saba Qamar along with Ushna Shah, Aijaz Aslam, Azekah Daniel and Noor ul Hasan Rizvi.

The story so far:

Nayaab is a young poor girl. She has a stepmother named Shamsa and her father, Ramzan, is an older, financially weaker man. Nayab’s stepmother disapproves of everything Nayab does and treats her like a slave. Nayab is friends with Mannat, a young woman who wasn’t as rich but got married to Shayan, a young man working/studying abroad. Mannat lives with her in-laws. Her sister in law, Haya is about to get married.

Her younger brother in law is Wajih, an eligible bachelor that Mannat wants Nayab to marry. Wajih likes Nayab and Haya also approves. Haya gives Nayab a pair of earrings which Haya’s mother wanted Wajih’s wife-to-be to have before Haya’s mother died. On the night of Haya’s engagement/mehndi (or something), Nayaab goes to Haya and Mannat’s house. As the fun is happening on the floor as everyone is dancing, Nayab disappears for a while.

Suddenly, Nayab falls from the top of the house to the floor.

She is rushed to the hospital where it is found out that she had been sexually assaulted and in the recent episode’s end, Nayab dies. The police wants to fire an FIR against Yawar via Ramzan but Yawar strongarms Ramzan through offering to pay for his daughter’s hospital fee. Nayab’s last words before dying were “Tell Mannat Raja is an animal/wolf” and “Wajih”. Mannat’s goes through a conflict and she confronts Wajih.

Wajih names his friend Raja but Raja has an alibi. Mannat faces Wajih again and he confesses to her that he did indeed call her upstairs on the roof. He attempted to attack her physically but she moved away from him, after which he hit her. To Mannat, he rants that he has never been refused by any girl in his life that is why Nayab’s refusal really got to him.

Review

What’s truly fantastic about this episode is the writing. Some of the scenes may be slow – but that’s a problem that plagues all Pakistani dramas sometimes, the editing is just painfully languid – but the writing is very, very together. In this episode, you see different contrasts in confessions and how society responds to women who want to speak up about sexual assault and injustices. There is an excellent dialog between Mannat’s mother (Gul e Rana) and Mannat where her mother asks her to stay silent and just quietly deal with whatever’s happening. Mannat’s husband is also not very happy with Mannat’s issues and it’s quite heartbreaking to watch. Saba Qamar and Bilal Abbas are truly outstanding in this episode as well, and we can’t wait to watch what happens next!
