The story so far:

Nayaab is a young poor girl. She has a stepmother named Shamsa and her father, Ramzan, is an older, financially weaker man. Nayab’s stepmother disapproves of everything Nayab does and treats her like a slave. Nayab is friends with Mannat, a young woman who wasn’t as rich but got married to Shayan, a young man working/studying abroad. Mannat lives with her in-laws. Her sister in law, Haya is about to get married. Her younger brother in law is Wajih, an eligible bachelor that Mannat wants Nayab to marry. Wajih likes Nayab and Haya also approves. Haya gives Nayab a pair of earrings which Haya’s mother wanted Wajih’s wife-to-be to have before Haya’s mother died. On the night of Haya’s engagement/mehndi (or something), Nayaab goes to Haya and Mannat’s house. As the fun is happening on the floor as everyone is dancing, Nayab disappears for a while. Suddenly, Nayab falls from the top of the house to the floor. She is rushed to the hospital where it is found out that she had been sexually assaulted and in the recent episode’s end, Nayab dies. The police wants to fire an FIR against Yawar via Ramzan but Yawar strongarms Ramzan through offering to pay for his daughter’s hospital fee. Nayab’s last words before dying were “Tell Mannat Raja is an animal/wolf” and “Wajih”.

Review:

In all the saas-bahu galore, Cheekh is actually a change of pace. While there is shadi, biyaah and hangaama associated in the play, the real story takes place beyond these elements. There is class, wealth, gender and legal issues that are brought to the forefront. These issues are dealt with realistically by the team behind Cheekh. Saba Qamar is wonderful as Mannat and so is Bilal Abbas. Bilal doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to displaying a certain dubiousness about him. Surprisingly, Cheekh, despite all the blood and gore, is a watchable murder mystery thriller that you can not just binge watch but actually take out time to see.
