Suzi Perry visits the Unruly Smart Home of the Future

“Alexa” is quickly becoming one of the most common names spoken in households up and down the country, as smart devices continue to invade our homes. With Christmas fast approaching, will you be buying some smart home tech? Will you be upgrading some of the tech you already have?

To walk us through some of the smart home tech available this festive season, Legal & General have released a new four-part series featuring former Gadget Show host Suzi Perry. Presenting from the Unruly Home of the Future Now, Suzi walks viewers through various apps and devices, including fire and water damage protectors, smart doorbells and even the ability to sync your oven timer to the lights in your home.

In the first instalment of the series, produced on behalf of Legal & General, Suzi checks out options for home alerts, including smart home surveillance systems which can recognise whether somebody is a stranger, and apps which allow us to control our lights when we’re away from home.

In the second instalment, Suzi explains the benefit of IFTTT, an app which syncs smart devices together, allowing us to control our smart homes quicker and easier. IFTTT even lets you pair your oven timer with your lights, so if you have your music turned up a little too loud it will flash to let you know when your dinner’s ready.

In the third instalment, Suzi showcases the devices which alert us in the event of fire or water damage in our homes. Smart water detectors can identify leaks before water has time to do major damage, whilst smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors send alerts to our phones the moment they detect something is awry.

In the final instalment of the series, and something which we are all conscious of, Suzi takes a look at how we can achieve peace of mind when we are away from home for longer periods. These include a device which shuts off all electronics in the home, and a smart doorbell which can show us exactly who is stood on our doorstep.

In a survey conducted by Mintel – The Connected Home, they discovered that the most popular pieces of tech include 36% interested in smart wi-fi connected thermostat, 35% interested in smart voice-controlled speaker and 33% interested in smart wi-fi connected lightbulbs.

Millennials are the most likely generation to buy smart tech, as the study found that 52% of 18-34 year olds have an interest in smart home products, compared to just 22% of those aged 55+.

Currently, 13% of people have a smart voice-controlled speaker within the home, with 74% of owners using the tech to play music, and 94% using it to get general information such as local cinema times.

A separate study from PWC found that in 2019 Brits will spend £10.8 billion on smart home tech. 23% of consumers plan to purchase some form of smart home tech in the next 2 years, whilst 39% of people enter the market via smart entertainment.

Whether you plan on buying some smart home tech, or upgrading what you already have, it’s clear that our homes are set to continue becoming ‘smarter’.
