Sheheryaar Munawar speaks about Item Numbers.

Sheheryaar Munawar is a super fun young star but that doesn’t mean Munawar is without depth or substantial thought. The actor was recently in Dubai for Masala Awards when I caught up with him for an interesting bit of conversation. I asked Sheheryaar Munawar about his take on item numbers. He had some very philosophical ideas and a fairly thought out rationale. I ask him about art being art and not making a politically correct comment and how some people use the same justification for item numbers.

On item numbers:

“See I have a very different take on that,” says Sheheryaar Munawar. “When you take the art out of it, yes. There’s a certain performance and craft in item numbers. We come from a society we used to have this as an art form for the longest time. When you take the art out of it, and you use it simply for vulgarity for the masses, the objectification and sexualization of certain content, then it’s something different. But as an artist, if a woman is a crafty performer, if she is good at dance or if she wants to be able to exercise that craft, she should it be able to do it.”

Art being art as a form of self-expression.

Sheheryaar Munawar also accepts that there is certain merit to the argument: “Art being art as being a form of self-expression, I do understand what you’re saying by that,” he says. “But I do feel if you are in a position to create, God hasn’t given this gift to everyone.”

“If you believe in utilitarianism,” he adds, “you have that unique position in society that you have a voice and you can influence people. And then you have a responsibility. If you say something and tomorrow if someone goes out and shoots twenty people, then yeah, you should feel responsible. You have to take that onus. I do feel there is a certain bit of responsibility when it comes to create art. Art can influence people and help people make choices. If you don’t understand the impact or if you don’t understand the responsibility you have as an artist, how does that differentiate you from a classic villain in stories? A villain  has negative intentions and wants destroy everything. If you know that your art is going to have an effect, and if you you know that it’s going to have that negative effect – then you should be in prison!”

Social Responsibility:

Sheheryaar Munawar: “I’m not going to propagate things that are going to be harmful for the society,” says Munawar. “Something as simple as someone wearing a seatbelt when they’re driving, in Pakistan it’s still an issue. For some reason it’s very ‘manly’ not to wear a seatbelt!”

The actor was seen this year in Saat Din Mohabbat In opposite Mahira Khan. He would be seen next year in Parey Hut Love opposite Maya Ali and alongside Zara Noor Abbas.
