Review | Baba Jani | Episode 05 – 06 | Faysal Quraishi | Savera Nadeem | Madiha Imam

Baba Jani, the drama airing from Geo Network is about a man named Asfand (Faysal Quraishi) marrying an ailing woman named Saadia (Savera Nadeem). Saadia has a young daughter (Madiha Imam). Asfand’s sister Najiba (Saba Hamid) is devious and really throwing fits and schemes right left and centre.

Here’s what has happened.

Asfand and Saadia have gotten nikahofied with close friends and Asfand’s khala’s blessings!

The deliciously evil melodramatic behn!

Naila and Najiba are all collectively hyperventilating about this. Saba Hamid is absolutely delicious in being totally melodramatic. What’s interesting is how both these women are absolutely convinced of their own victimhood!

Saadia asks her daughter to gather her things. May we comment on how beautiful Savera Nadeem looks in this plain white ensemble with minimal makeup?

A conflicted farewell:

Nimra (Madiha Imam) is too attached to a desk her father left for her. She insists they take it with them. Saadia agrees but sees how upset Nimra is. Savera Nadeem’s bittersweet expressions as they leave a house they had lived in for long really add an interesting element to the story.

Nimra, Saadia and Asfand come to Asfand’s house. Nimra is still very withdrawn and Asfand’s trying his best to help everyone be comfortable.

Still loving Saadia’s attire!

Pinch us, there’s a likeable male protagonist.

You gotta love how Faiza Iftikhar has created a conflicted but good male protagonist without turning him into the devil incarnate or a foolish idiot. Faysal Qureishi really does a great job in portraying this role.

Asfand, are you even real, bro?

Favorite part of the series is definitely Asfand’s character and how he’s the kind of guy who would happily cook for himself and for his wife and his stepdaughter without any problems or hangups. He’s a keeper, isn’t he? And – um, is he even real?

Plot twist!

But uh-oh, Saadia gets sick and Nimra is obviously upset at all of this. Asfand is still their rock, taking care of everything. You also gotta like how we show Saadia is a woman of pride and integrity because she’s still worried about who’s going to pay all of these expensive hospital bills!

Some relief:

There are some sweet moments between Saadia and Asfand that make us go awww….

Enter evil nand.

What’s a drama without a few cliches, eh?

Asfand’s really trying to make this work, the poor chap. So is Saadia’s inherent goodness.

There’s a lot of victim blamey diatribe that happens which we’re obviously no fans of but it’s good that all this negative energy comes from an overtly negative character.

Family Politics To Ruin It All.

Asfand’s brother in law (Amir Qureshi) is no less of a schemer himself. He becomes a bit of a victim as all of Najiba and Naila’s family descends upon Asfand’s house to stay the night and Asfand is a little embarrassed in front of Nimra.

So to sum up…

Things are moving towards a really complicated space where Asfand’s sisters are trying their best to mess everything up. Saadia’s health is also deteriorating and there has been no ice broken between Nimra and Asfand. We’re glued.
