xFyro xS2 – Wireless Earbuds

The concept of truly wireless earbuds is not new. We have had a fair few tries ourselves, and with the likes of Apple EarPods, it is a mainstream concept. While I have not tried the Apple EarPods, everything else I have tried has offered decent sound but horrible connectivity. Sometimes one of the earbuds skips a beat, or sometimes you just cannot pair it again with your device. xFyro get rid of that frustration with their true wireless and IP rated Earbuds.

Looks

The package is pretty standard for such headphones. You get a case, that lets you charge these. Within that case are two earbuds, one for each ear. As usual, you do have the choice of changing the size of the earbud on both.

On top of each earbud is a button, that lets you turn it on or off, play or pause, or answer/reject calls.

As is evident in the lifestyle picture above, the earbud itself is quite small and fits nicely, but the business/tech end is actually quite large.

The case itself has two sides with ports on it, one that says OUT and one that says IN. Both have rubber flaps on them to give them some level of ingress protection. Expose the IN, and you get a micro USB port to let you charge these. Expose the OUT and you get a USB-A port to charge your devices such as your phone or other headphones. Mind you, at 850mAh, you probably don’t want to do much of that.

There are LEDs on the earbuds which flash blue to indicate connection, red to indicate charge/charging, and flash between two to indicate pairing. There is also an LED on the case to indicate charge/charging. It isn’t very obvious when it is fully charged.

The feel

As already mentioned, the business end is quite large on these. So while they fit well, and stay put, you cannot but notice the big lump of device in your ear. However, depending on your lifestyle and how you feel, this feeling can either go away or be enhanced as the day goes by. For us it became quite noticeable after an hour or two. However, I must add that I am not a big fan of in-ear headphones as they all feel like this to me after the same time period.

Setup and Connectivity

The biggest issue I was expecting was connectivity. The device pairs with your phone via Bluetooth. Both earbuds have the capacity to be master, which is good.

To pair, simply hold the power button on either earbud for 4 seconds. This will then give you a RED/BLUE led flash which indicates pairing mode. At this point you should be able to connect to it via your phone (usual setup).

The earbuds will give you audio instructions and feedback about the connection.

When one earbud is connected, simply hold the power button on the second earbud for 2 seconds to pair that to the first one.

If you hold it for four seconds, that may enter pairing mode too, which we managed to avoid.

After that, you can listen to your music.

In order to turn off, simply hold the power button and it will tell you that the power is turned off. It was a bit confusing if it did that for both or one, but it does do it for both. They can then be popped into the case for charging.

To connect again, simply press the button for 2 seconds on either and once both are on, they will connect.

Any connectivity issues?

No, I am very happy to report that there were none. While it does take a little while to get used to the buttons and how to turn it off or on, they connected every single time. No app needed, no fancy instructions to hang on to. Just like any other Bluetooth headphones, they just work.

Audio quality

The audio on these is pretty decent and powerful. The volume goes quite up, not something I would normally recommend.

In terms of songs or audio, I did notice a very slight background hiss any time these were ‘active’, ie playing a song or during a phone call. While this is good as active feedback of these being on, I can’t help but think that it is technically just noise that is being played out to you on top of your audio.

In terms of noise isolation, they are pretty decent and cut out most noise.

More information

More information on the xFyro xS2 as well as buying information can be found on their website.

It is due to be on sale for $250 USD, but is currently going for £96 GBP. Bundles that save you money are also available.

Verdict

We were very impressed with how well they work in terms of connectivity, something we have been disappointed with so far in terms of other devices. The sound is decent, but the hiss is a bit annoying.

Update (May 2019) – one fell out!

It has been a few good months of using these a few times a week while I cycle for my daily commute or about the place. I have to sadly report that one of those fell out while I was cycling, and as luck would have it, a car went over it and that was that.

It needs to be said that the other one still works, and the case still works in terms of charging. However, obviously, you won’t get anything stereo any more.
