Huawei Mate 20 Lite – Hands on with the phone

With the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, Huawei are not just releasing a decent midrange phone. They are also setting a teaser out to the world. The statement is simple: if the Lite offers this, what will the Pro have in store?

With the phone launched today, we got the chance to go hand-on with the device. Here are our first impressions of the device:

Beautiful look

The phone feels and looks good. The display is great. It has the 2.5D curve that is becoming all too common with Huawei phones. The screen offers a notch up top, and you’ve got curved corners on the display itself.

We tried out some videos, and the display was sharp. With 4GB of RAM, you don’t need to worry about smoothness either. It works well, and you can scroll through films quickly without worrying about loading times.

At under 200g and 7.6mm, it fits easily in your pocket.

It is mostly about the camera

Whether it is their partnership with Leica or the likes of P20 Pro, you know that Huawei is super serious about cameras and photography. You (only) get two lenses on this, but for a midrange device, the camera works really well.

Where it shines is AI. AI let’s you chop and change things all over the place. There are 22 scenes that it can detect. If you thought being able to distinguish between food, cats and dogs was fancy, you now have pandas, bikes and cars.

Add to that the spotlighting effects thrown into selfies, and you suddenly have something that gives you pretty decent results. Unlike some other phones, you also get the same AI whether you are using the front camera or the back. In fact, that is one of the highlight features. You do not have to compromise when you go to the front camera.

You also have Qmojis – a fun feature.

It is targetted at the student/mid 20s market

This is a pretty decent phone, but with an under £400 price, it is targetted towards the students and people in their mid-20s. The features and the looks make that pretty clear.

You may be forgiven if you mistake the Huawei Mate 20 Lite for an Honor phone. After all, they are all rooted in the same hardware.

Analysis

The device is pretty decent for what it offers. Price-wise, it sits at least a little bit north of where it should be. However, as a complete package, especially if AI does it for you, you have a pretty decent device in your hands.
