Chillmax Pillow – The ultimate low effort low key cooling solution

There is no denying that it has been a pretty intense summer around the world. The UK, which generally laughs at its appalling summers, suffered temperatures well above 30 degC for the first time in years. It was hard enough being out, but it was the nights when we really suffered. Not everyone can afford or put air conditioners in their bedrooms. Fans work to some degree, but even they have their limitations. They also add noise and take up electricity. Chillmax Pillow, a product from JML, very nicely addresses this very problem. It is a pad with a cooling gel that takes away heat and cools you down, with no effort from you.

Chillmax Pillow – Features

  • Naturally cooling gel pillow
  • Chillmax™ Gel transfers heat away from your body
  • Use as a pillow, mat or cushion
  • Use to cool laps and laptops when working
  • For extra cooling refrigerate before use
  • No need for water or refilling
  • Portable and travel size

Look and feel

The Chillmax Pillow is effectively a small sheet with a gel inside it. It is soft and squishy, but it holds its structure well enough.

It is sized smaller than a usual pillow, so it can easily be inserted inside a pillowcase, or placed on a cushion to allow you to sit on it.

The science

The Chillmax Pillow works on the principle of taking heat away from your body, and hence cooling you down. It is the same thing you may notice if you touch a big metallic table in a lab or office. While it is at the same temperature as the air around you, being a big lump of metal means it draws heat out of your hand and gives you the sensation of cooling.

The secret is within the cooling gels within it, which act like that big lump of metal.

If you were to measure the temperature of the thing itself, it is exactly the same as everything around you.

Using it

I knew the science, but I had no idea how effective this thing really would be.

To begin with, I sat with my feet on it. I immediately got a cooling sensation, and it was almost as good as being sat with your feet dangling in a cool pool.

Next, it moved under my bum on the sofa, as I sat there watching TV and mooching dinner. It was around 30 odd degrees and humid, and I definitely needed some help. The sensation was more tingly and ‘interesting’ in this case, but comforting and cooling nonetheless. Definitely a pass and definitely something that I would try again.

Next, I moved it on to my shoulders where it cooled my neck. Once again, a success.

Final test: the pillow! So, I popped it on top of my pillow, lay down to sleep. Definitely another success.

A general note: It works best when it is squeezed or has some weight on it. Probably how the chemicals are activated.

Verdict

This was an instant hit and definitely something I will be using every time it gets too hot!
