Huawei P20 Pro – the best phone camera, but what about the phone?

The Huawei P20 Pro is pretty much the best camera you can buy in a phone right now. The internet is full of these reviews, and I will not negate them. But what phone do you get with this amazing camera? Read our review below to find out.

Now before we go any further, we have to say that the camera on this device is pretty much the best you can get. Yeah, you may argue that the Pixel 2 XL and iPhone X offer great photography with their AI enhanced capturing techniques, but you can’t beat the 5-times zoom that comes with the P20 Pro, thanks to the triple camera setup. Add AI photography on top, and you have a camera setup like no other on a smartphone. Will this be a new trend? We are yet to see, but it will definitely be one to watch!

Look and Feel

Notches may have been a new thing 6 months ago, but now all the phones are featuring them. The P20 Pro is no different. The front of the phone is mostly screen, while the back highlights the triple camera setup.

On the bottom of the screen is the home button which is also the fingerprint sensor. With soft home button on the display already, this is pretty much the fingerprint sensor for the phone.

The right side features the power and volume keys, while the bottom has the USB C port.

Oh yeah, no 3.5mm slot on this phone, though the speakers at the bottom try their best to compensate.

Performance

The P20 Pro features the Kirin 970 processor as well as 6GB of RAM. Is the phone fast? Exceedingly so. Does it handle multi-tasking? Brilliantly. Can you play high-end games? Totally!

The OS

For years, Huawei has been delivering top-notch hardware with their own skin on top of Android. The P20 Pro is no different. The phone features EMUI 8.1, the latest and greatest version of their take on Android. Once again, you have no app drawer so you are living in a world which is somewhere between an iPhone front with an Android back end.

Of course, being Android means that you can easily customise the look and feel.

The settings are extensive and allow you to play around a lot, with various features such as battery saving and such like.

Huawei also allows you to easily transfer data from your old phone, be it a Huawei phone, any other Android, or even iPhone!

The built-in apps leave a little to be desired, but once again the Play Store will happily let you change that. Annoyingly, not all built in apps can be deleted.

Battery Life

Finally, a pro phone with a pro battery! It was great to see the phone come with a 4000 mAh battery and it does not disappoint. You can easily last a day and happily take it into the next. The super-charge mode is great too, leaving little to be desired.

Of course, the one spot where the battery does take a hit is if you are out and about using nothing but the camera. It might be the AI, or just the fact the screen is fully on and working hard. Regardless, it still performs reasonably well.

Camera

While the purpose of this review is to stay away from the camera, but we simply cannot tick this one without mentioning a few highlight features:

  • 5 times zoom
  • Amazing night mode that allows you to take an image at night, while holding it with your hands, over 5 seconds. There is a lot of software at play here, but boy are the results good.
  • AI mode that surpasses others

I would encourage everyone to look around, as well as check out the P20 Pro gallery set up by JMComms.

More information

More information on the Huawei P20 Pro can be found on the Huawei website.

The original price for the phone was £800. However, a quick search on Amazon shows you options of around £620. A deal last week even showed a price of £500. Shop around and you may find a really cracking deal.

Final Verdict

The Huawei P20 Pro is a battery rock star and provides you with a camera that will not let you worry about missing that great shot. The Huawei P20 Pro is definitely worth the hype. It gives you everything you possibly want from a smartphone which includes fast performance, a long-lasting battery and amazing camera.

With the recent price drops, this is pretty much the best Android phone you can buy!
