Farhat Ishtiaq’s message for Mother’s Day.

On this Mother’s Day, listen to our beloved writer Farhat Ishtiaq express her thoughts about it.

Although I believe every day of our lives should be Mother’s Day – because mothers are to be loved and cherished throughout our lives – but there is still no harm in celebrating Mother’s Day. On this particular day, we can tell our mothers how much we love them, which we don’t say as often as we should, now that we’ve all grown older. We can make our Ammas feel special on this day by spending quality time with them, cooking their favorite food or plan a surprise for them. Just anything, really, that will make them happy!

Here are two of our favorite mums that Farhat has written in her plays.

Our first fave mum is Sheeda in Udaari, Meera’s mother in Udaari.

Udaari was a very important play in many aspects as it talked about child sexual abuse in a very powerful way. It showed that a character who is trusted by all commits this crime – which is an important reminder to all parents that when it comes to our children, we can never be careful enough.

In Udaari, Sheeda, Bushra Ansari’s mother, unconditionally believes her daughter, Meera (Urwa Hocane), when Meera comes forward with her experience of being sexually assaulted by Imtiaz (Ahsan Khan). We all need to have mothers like Sheeda who stand by their daughters and don’t question their testimony and their statements when they are brave enough to talk about their experiences of abuse.

Lubna in Yaqeen ka Safar, Dr. Asfandyaar’s Mom:

In Yaqeen Ka Safar, Lubna, played by Sabiha Sumar, was a loving mother and was always in touch with what was going on in her children’s lives. She was also someone who dealt with loss and tragedy. She felt deeply for her children, Asfi and Daniyal, both of whom struggled against great odds. She stood by her husband and also was very kind and loving to her daughter in law, Gaiti.
