Virgin Media – Enable WiFi Calling on your router

For those of us stuck in low signal areas, WiFi calling is a godsend. Whether you are on an iPhone or an (select few) Android, you can just go to your settings and enable this. In the UK, most services offer WiFi calling, be it EE, Three or O2. As long as you have a decent WiFi you can make phone calls. Often ignored, this can be quite necessary for people like me who work on a site that has very low signal. Sadly, by default, WiFi Calling is disabled if you are connected to a Virgin Media router.

The reason it doesn’t work is that Virgin Media routers (such as Super Hub) are configured for the maximum setting possible on their Firewalls. This means that when your phone tries to connect to your WiFi calling service, the system doesn’t allow it to authenticate.

The good news is, all you need to do is go and change the settings from your router. While it may sound a bit complicated, the process is pretty easy. In this article, we will walk you through the process.

Log into your Virgin Media Router

This is the simplest step. If you are connected directly to your Virgin Media router, simply open a browser window, and type the ‘home’ address in it. For you, it will be 192.168.0.1. You can do this through a computer or a mobile device.

This will open up the following window:

To login, you need to have your Settings Password and WPS Pin. Luckily, they can be found on your router. For the Super Hub, they are written at the bottom of your router. There is also the option to change this if needed.

Access Advanced Settings

Once you login, you will see the following screen.

Hit the ‘Advanced Settings button, in the bottom right of the screen.

This will take you to the Advanced Settings Menu.

Select Firewall from Advanced Settings

If you scroll below, you will come across the Security section. Access Firewall from the settings, as show below.

Change settings to allow VPN access

Once in Firewall, you can pretty much make the changes as shown in the image below:

  • Set Firewall Protection to Low
  • Disable Port Scan Detection and IP Flood Detection
  • Enable everything under Pass Through, i.e. IPSEC, PPTP and Multicast.

Hit Apply.

WiFi Calling should be enabled.

You should soon see the ‘EE (or whatever) WiFi Call’ on top of your phone to tell you that the service is now enabled.
