What to Expect from the Smartphones of 2018

Smartphones have seen a meteoric rise in the decade that has passed since the release of the first iPhone in 2007. Over the years, about half the world’s population became the proud owner of a smartphone – you are probably reading this article on one. Smartphones allow you not only to stay in touch with friends and relatives but also to quickly find information, make payments, consume media in pretty much any form, and entertain yourself with games of top quality at Canadian casino Vegas Palms if you like. Over the years, smartphones have become bigger, lighter, and much more powerful – but their evolution seems to have slowed down a bit recently. What can we expect from the smartphones released in 2018? Let’s take a look.

Processing power

Last year, we had three processors competing for the “best of the year”: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, Samsung’s Exynos 8895, and Huawei’s Kirin 960. The latter two were, of course, used in certain editions of their respective manufacturers’ leading models – Exynos 8895 was used in Samsung’s Galaxy S8/S8 Plus and Note8 models, Kirin 960 showed up in several high-end Huawei smartphones, while Snapdragon 835 was the System-on-a-Chip used in pretty much every other flagship released in 2017.

For 2018, Qualcomm prepares for the release of Snapdragon 845 with eight cores clocked at up to 2.8GHz, a better GPU, faster network connections, and a new Hexagon™ 685 DSP for AI and imaging. Samsung’s recently announced Exynos 9810 chip, expected to power the manufacturer’s upcoming Galaxy S9/Note9 series, will take things one step further with CPU speeds of up to 2.9GHz, support for 4K/UHD displays, and native support for two 24MP cameras or a dual 16MP sensor. And Kirin 970, the chip found in Huawei’s new Mate 10 flagship, also has similar performances (a bit below the other two, of course).

Screen

Smartphone screens are slowly reaching their biggest diagonal to keep the devices usable. So, until the first rollable and foldable smartphones are released, we don’t expect to see any phones with 6″ displays – this would be unpractical. But phones will be able to offer more content on the same screen size by boosting their resolution. As we mentioned above, Samsung’s Exynos 9810 supports 4K/UHD resolutions – we might see more 4K flagships hit the market.

Sensors

This year, smartphone brand Vivo (owned by the company behind Oppo and OnePlus) has announced the first smartphone with a fingerprint reader built into the display, a feature everyone expected to be included in Apple’s iPhone X. This year, we’ll probably see more devices released with this feature. And many others that will take Apple’s path and work on a safe and quick facial recognition system to make unlocking phones easier.
