Improve your mood & workflow with these desks of the future

Supposing that it wasn’t apparent through wit, it has become disturbingly clear through research that sitting all day long is bad for your well-being. What’s alarming about this confirmation is that additional physical activity doesn’t offset the effects of what scientists call “protracted sedentary time.” Similar to how tomato juice and jogging don’t compensate for a night of drinking and smoking, a bit of evening exercise doesn’t eradicate the physical harm resulting from a full day’s work at your desk.

Following this revelation, a good number of people have resorted to active desks – a treadmill desk or a standing workspace – but research on this latest trend is still strewn to conclude its perks (and potential downsides) – for now.

Canadian-based researchers analyzed 23 active desk reports to draw deductions on how treadmill and standing desks impact our mental performance and physiological health. Let’s explore how contemporary desks improve your mood and workflow.

Effect on work performance

Standing desks have minimal effect on typical work duties such as typing. One study revealed staff stationed at a sit-stand workplace for up to four hours daily for a week had no considerable difference in typing errors or characters typed in a minute while standing. However, eight pertinent treadmill studies comprising of 242 participants, reported some insignificant drop in mouse and typing proficiencies were noted.

Effect on mood

Study participants stationed on futuristic desks exhibited an apparent boost in their mood. In one 7-week study of the standing desk use, partakers reported decreased confusion, tension, depression, fatigue and increased focus, happiness, energy and vigour. When they returned to their old workplace, their general mood dropped to baselines levels.

One study of how a treadmill desk affects personnel mood divulged a considerable drop in stress over a fortnight.

Effect on cognitive functions

Strangely, there’s no research to suggest how standing desks affect cognitive abilities. However, the outcomes from four studies of 167 participants were inspiring: they observed no adverse effect on things such as attention, reading, and processing.

Bottom line

Using these futuristic desks enabled for consistent work performance among staff that transitioned from sitting and increased their happiness levels. Perhaps the best option for most employees is a hybrid sit-stand desk: as it offers the benefits of standing while simultaneously avoiding muscle aches that may arise as a result of standing for long hours.

Treadmill desks resulted in a few drawbacks such as a decrease in typing speeds, though evidence hints those dwindle over time.

Also, treadmill and standing desks don’t affect cognitive processes negatively thus researchers deduced that active desks “therefore have no damaging ramifications on the standard of work produced.”

Consequently, evidence points to win for the body and mind. Check out Zen Space Desks for all your active desks needs and accessories.
