Will The Toyota E-Palette Concept Vehicle Change Business Transport?

Toyota were among the companies announcing new products at CES 2018 and one of the big announcements from them was about a new mobility service business alliance. The launch partners include Amazon, Uber, Pizza Hut, DiDi and Mazda and they will collaborate on vehicle planning, vehicle verification activities and application concepts.

Toyota shared information about a new e-Palette Concept Vehicle. The Alliance will focus development on this vehicle which is designed to fulfil the demands of future multi-mode transport and business applications. The e-Palette Concept Vehicle is a purpose-built electric vehicle offered in three sizes with lengths between 4 and 7 metres, with the vehicle displayed at CES measuring 4,800mm long, 2,000mm wide and 2,250mm high. It has a low-floor, cube shaped design with a barrier-free interior. It can basically be anything you want it to be. It can be a mobile shop, an office, a restaurant or a hotel room. There is a lot of potential in a vehicle like this.

“This announcement marks a major step forward in our evolution towards sustainable mobility, demonstrating our continued expansion beyond traditional cars and trucks to the creation of new values, including services for customers.”

It is hoped that using the advanced mobility technology available, the Alliance partners will be able to increase convenience, productivity and efficiency and therefore support their customers’ lifestyles. The purpose-built vehicle is flexible and will leverage Toyota’s proprietary Mobility Services Platform, developing a suite of connected mobility solutions. It is an automated battery electric vehicle or BEV and will be scalable and customisable.

Toyota are endeavouring to create new mobility services with other technology developers and service providers. They are also planning to conduct feasibility testing of the e-Palette Concept around the world in the 2020s. There is even talk of the impact the e-Palette concept could have on the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games in 2020.
